I replaced the cable on my downriggers with braid. It works great, but the only thing I can't figure out.. How do you use stacker clips on the braid? mine just seemed to slide up and down. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm going to assume you have Scottys, is that correct? I would try a Scotty line stop. If you can't get the line stop over the braid, have you seen the small lead fishing weights with the rubber center? I'm 100% sure those would fit and work.

Also, the Shuttle Hawk comes with a stopper. Its small where it shouldn't run any kind of interferance. Might be able to purchase them seperately.

I also know soneone useing braid and he is set up with the offshore stackers(2-releases on wire & swivel) but replaced big black heavy release with yellow ones

101goodpost101 Cabelas has a (walker) double pad release that should do the job, put the clip on the line Can't lose it. one pad on the line to hold it where you want it and like only child said put the release of your liking on in place of the second pad..... TL

Shuttle Hawk

I use the Shuttle Hawk on my braided line and really like the concept. However, there is a design defect with it that I'll probably have to fix myself. The device slides onto the rigger cable via a slot cut into it for that purpose. See the product here and you'll see the slot. If you stop to real in the fish off that release, the Hawk will plane to the surface. If the boats forward motion completely stops and there is any wave action on the surface the Hawk can move sideways and slip off the rigger line. Then it will sink to the bottom and you're out $15 or so.

I have a couple ideas about how to fix this and will talk to Shasta Tackle about them shortly. If I come up with a workable fix I'll share it with y'all. Other than that defect, I really like the product.

dubob, I've heard of several different fixes guys have used for the shuttlehawk open slot problem. The use of the miniest size binder clip sounded like a great solution to me.

The shuttle hawk problem can be fixed with a simple rubber band.

The small on line plastic clips that have been talked about that are used with teh shuttle hawks are used and manufactured by Scotty. They work great on Their riggers and are used as a stop on the auto retreive system.

Simple to use and adjust. I just havent used them myself on the scottys with the braid.

I use the clip shown in the attachment with a piece of 3/16" surgical tubing that I slide into the contact area of the clip on my braided downrigger line. 1432585153459.gif

I use a piece of wire leader, small, plastic coated wire. I crimp a snap swivel to one end and crimp the other end to the back of the shuttle hawk (where the release hole is). The wire should be slightly longer then the shuttle hawk, that way there is no tension on downrigger line from the wire leader when shuttle hawk is on the rise.Fasten snap swivel to downrigger line and you are set to go. I run the wire on top of the shuttle hawk. I did lose one last year, after years of use the crimp spot on wire gave way, check crimps every so often. Bob R

I do basically the same thing, but I use 50# braid. I drill a small hole in the shuttle hawk (also my chamberlain stacking releases) run the line through the hole, tie a small bead on one side, and a snap on the other. Clip the snap to the downrigger cable and no more lost stuff. It really hurts to watch a $20 chamberlain release sink to the bottom, trust me, I know. I did use a rubber band on the shuttlehawk and never had a problem, just went with what I found to be the most reliable method.

Shuttlehawks

I am the type of person that has a hard time buying something if I can figure out how to make it. It is easy enough to make ones that work well for a fraction of the cost. I have made mine with a swivel in the front that clips to the downrigger line so there isn't any worry about the shuttlehawk coming off. My friend just made a little larger hole in the middle of his that he took his downrigger weight off and put the line through the hole. Once again there isn't any way for it to come off. I just use some sinkers on the clip line to cause the shuttlehawk to come to the surface.
