the Oregon sportsman show is less than 2 weeks. Feb. 5th to 9th got my free tickets from the boat show so I am ready to go hit the kokanee guys to see what's new especially fwg garys new dodgers and spinner beads. also have my questions for the humming bird, cannon and minn kota guys should be a good time. dfly

Hi dfly - We have a daughter and family in Portland so we will be down from Spokane and taking in the show while there. PM me and maybe we could meet at the show and take a look at the new kokanee gear. Alan

I'll be there Wednesday and Friday evenings. Tackle, tackle, tackle, and a few things for the boat if the prices are right.

Still gotta get;

folbe rod holders (junior)
downrigger weight retrievers
couple boat knives
tool holders, probably "holdzit"

Drogonfly, I was just at the sportsman show in puyallup and purchased some dogers and lures from FWG. I had read his website before and his research and theory on matching colors and contrast were intriguing.

Have you used his method/products ? How do they work?

I picked up a couple of his White lightning and one of his Dawnas Dream (on his recommendation).

I plan on running them side by side with what worked well for me last year to give it a test out.

Wife and I may make the drive down to check out the portland show...hear it is QUITE at bit larger than the puyallup show.

I don't mean to butt in here but yes Gary has a lot of stuff that works very well, but the problem is so does kokaneekid, crystal basin, rocky mountain, R&K spinners, Paulina Peak tackle, Shasta tackle, Vance, Kokanee Tackle ................

I strongly suggest you come down to the Portland show.....and pickup several tackle boxes thumbsup
I have two and a third just for lure parts. That's what koke fishing is all about.

Yep...been trying it all out. ...That's one thing I like about Koke fishing....So many options .

Already have the 2 boxes of lure parts and plan on adding more. Love creating my own lures...very gratifying when a lure I created catches fish.

See you in PDX.

there's one thing I learned at Greenpeter, white works and I never would have tried it if my wife hadn't put one of garys set ups on that he gave me. she was catching fish faster than I could re set her downrigger then it was time to net another fish and now it is part of my go to, along with kokanee creek tackle's leaping lizard dodgers (which he has in brass now along with matching spiner blades) and splatter blade bead spinners. like dave I have many boxes and separated into painted, silver, brass, gold and copper dodgers and sling blades then others with hoochies, spinner blades, apex and spin & glo's which I have made up or can build as I go. but as you fish different lakes you will see a pattern that the fish prefer so you start with that and move on from there. also keep an eye out and see what others are using if every one is fishing silver and no one is catching anything switch to gold and see if that helps doing the same thing and expecting different results, well you know the rest. and just when you think you have them figured out they change. dfly

Thanks for the reply. That's what keeps fishing interesting. If it was easy all the time the fun would wear off. .... Well , eventually. :)

Just beware on the stuff that catches fisherman not fish its very important when something is question able don't be afraid to ask

Thanks for the offer of help MrMike...I will take you guys up on it.

I've Been a Salmon and Steelheader for some time (just new to kokes last year). Learned long ago that MOST of the lures, etc are to catch fishermen. Still fall for it every once in a while.

There is a reason when you go into the Tackle shop and you look at a wall of plugs, spinners, etc that there are only a FEW of the pegs that are cleared...or in short supply.

Looking forward to the PDX show....never made the drive down to check it out from the Tacoma area. Wife and I plan on making it a "date" like thing golucky At least that what I'm selling it as . Seriously, she has really enjoyed the kokanee fishing....generally nicer weather, time to talk (unless the bite is on). Let's not forget the extra Rod's she can bring to the game. ;)

Thanks for all you help guys.

well the ice finally cleared enough by noon so I headed up to the expo, once I got to I-5 north it was fine. with less traffic I made it up there faster than dry with regular traffic the expo wasn't packed so the venders had time to go over things better so that was nice. talk with Gary at his fwg booth and he has expanded and come up with a lot of new stuff and some new designs I am dyeing to try now. he also re did his web site and added some more chapters to his kokanee university. also checked out the velocity line from Jarod Johnson and spoke with him for a while picked up the pink velocity rod and the velocity black ops bo 101 reel for my granddaughters birthday which we took apart and checked out his improvements I think I like it better than my camin gj ticas and like the ticas once across is 10' so its easy to use when setting back for trolling or long lining, no real need for a line counter, every one I talked to said business was about half of what it was last year because of the ice and snow so I feel for them. the Redmond show is next month and for some reason my granddaughter really likes going to that one (I think its the breakfast in sisters ) and last year I bought the Honda eu2000 cheaper than any place on the internet there so there should be some good buys. dfly

Hi dfly - I got up to the show Wed, Thursday, Friday. The snow definitely reduced the attendance. The good part for those of us who got to attend was more time with the tackle producers! I got some great insight and new ideas to try. I too looked at the new offerings from Gary at the FWG booth. I bought a setup that should work on the big kokanee and trout at lake Roosevelt in Eastern Washington. Can hardly wait to get it in the water this weekend. I also spent time with Kokaneekid and Gary Miralles Shasta Tackle; so much great stuff! I picked up a new spinner from Tom at Poulsen Cascade to try at Roosevelt too.

I really enjoyed the show, wish we could have met each other; next time - Alan

I took Friday off and drove to the Portland show from Bellingham. It took a while to get there but wasn't terrible. I made it through the snow around 1pm.

I picked up a couple rods, a couple reels and met with tons of venders. I think I found someone to build me the cleaning table I want to add to my new boat which I made the trip worth while. I spent some time talking to Gary from FWG. What a nice guy. I really enjoyed chatting with him. I have used his gear before and now have most of his new stuff...Haha. I owe him a report on how it does.

I also spent some time climbing in and out of boats. By the time I was done I was convinced that picking the Thunderjet was the right choice. I left feeling pretty good about the one I am buying.

I bought a two day ticket for the show but decided to bail early on Saturday. I had seen everything I really needed to see and didn't want to end up in another snow storm. Besides, I knew if I stayed I would just spend more money that I didn't need to... Had a great trip overall.

having a cleaning station and a wash down is the way to go I have a doghouse and built mine over it and fishing lakes like greenpeter and odel with a 25 fish limits its nice to be able to clean fish when the bite is slow so you are not cleaning 30 - 50 fish when you get back to the dock mine is set up with towels, bio soap, rubber gloves, my wacker, cutting board, knife and cooler for landing, wacking, gutting, and cleanup and every thing washes off the back of the boat and nothing ever gets on the floor

Dave I thought of that but after using the adjustable spray nozzle to rinse off and to pressure wash/ clean the back bone vain and blood out I just use it. its faster than just using running water. my thoughts anyway. dfly

SuperD- The new boat will have a spray down right next to where I am thinking of adding the board on the rear of the boat. I like the idea of tapping into it and having its own water but I will probably test it out with just the existing hose at first. Give it a few runs then tweak it. I am trying to figure out where to get a clamp to hold the fish down like on a cleaning board. Sure is nice to have them held in place. That might be overthinking it a bit.

Once you get your tray add some self sticking stair tread tape to put the fish on. It's pretty easy to hold those slippery guys down with that non-slip tread tape.
