I'm considering one of these rods for kokanee fishing. Has anyone had any experience with using them? Thanks for the help.

i have used Vance's spiral wrapped for several years and i think it is a great rod. i also have the yellow 7.6 Lamiglas kokanee rod and i seem to use the spiral wrapped more especially if i'm bringing in the boat with out using the net.

Have you had one in your hands yet? I'm an anti spiral rod guy and probably for a silly reason. My technique for loading the line into my downrigger clip involves sliding my hand from the butt of the rod to the tip to reach the line. With the spiral wrap I get a handful of rod eyes and it just annoys me. There are too many other good rods out there for me to endure that everytime I put a line down.

No I haven't done that. I can't even find a place to look at one near the Portland, Or. area. Maybe someone sells them here, but I don't know where. I have two 7.5 foot lami. brownish colored downrigger rods that I am familiar with and fish kokanee with them regularly, but their guides are all on top. When I load the leader into the pincher I just set the rod on the floor of the boat and then pick it back up when the line is loaded. Maybe I'm not doing that right. I've never really thought about it. I saw some red lami 7.5 foot rods with all the guides on top on Friday for $50 that looked and felt real good, so I am in the considering mode right now.

Take a look at the new Velocity rods both in the glass and the graphite. I picked up 2 of the blue glass rods at our ISE show and can't wait to get them in the water.

I guess i just like the way the rod loads up in the holder with the spiral wrap... seems more natural, not as much fatigue on the line/rod eyes as with conventional wraps. As far as loading the leader to the clip i got in the habit of laying the rod down at an angle with the tip against the downrigger.

I have had two of these for several years and love them. They are my go to rods for Wickiup as they are just a little beefier than my noodle rods. For lakes with smaller fish I tend to go with the noodles over the spirals.

I have 2 of Vance's LT 702 rods with Tica Gold Caiman 100 reels. They have been very good rods to fish the Gorge with. They have a little more backbone than his lighter rod but yet excellent for koke fishing. Just purchased 2 of the green Velocity combos while at the Sac ISE last month. Can't wait to use them. Also in my possession is 2 JJ red rods with Okuma convector 15 line counter reels.

I also have two of Vances 702 rods and they are my favorites for the downriggers. Convector 15 line counters on them. They are soft enough at tip for kokes, yet have enough backbone to handle large cutts and lakeres. About the only thing that I do not prefer them for is using side planers when trolling for wipers.

Smokepoles cites the versitility of the rod from small to large species. Personally, I like my koke rod to be a mono a mono style rod that is kokanee specific and even 12" kokes feel fun on. i.e. forget about backbone.

SuperD, you have a good point except all my koke fishing is targeted to the larger kokes at the Gorge. Not that I always succeed....... I gotta say that a 4# gorge koke puts the rod to more of a test than larger lakers and large cutts I have had the fortune to hook into.

I use my noodle koke rods for Gorge kokes too. Nothing like fighting a Gorge koke where the rod bends from the tip all the way to the handle. LOL!

You say you use your noodle koke rods for Gorge kokes too. Are you talking about a different rod than the 7.5 foot spiral wrapped kokanee rod?

Denny,
When you hear terms like "soft tip but plenty of backbone" it infers that the rod blank below the tip is somewhat stiff and gives the fisherman power to fight bigger fish. Using my mono a mono analogy, I like rods with very little or no backbone so that the fish can have its way with me and I'm just holding on for the ride. So, you wouldn't find me owning one of these spiral wraps. I have fished inexpensive Shakespear Agility rods forever but bought a super noodle Lamiglass last year and a couple of the Velocity blue rods to add to the collection this year. The Lamiglass rod makes retrieveing the lure feel like a challenge and the new Velocity rods feel like they are going to give me everything I'm looking for in a hand to fin combat with the fish.

I have one of Vance's spiral rods paired with an Okuma Magma Pro DL15 and a red Jared Johnson rod paired with a Tica for kokanee fishing. Love them both! Tortuga uses both Vance's spiral wrap rods with Abu Garcia lefties.

I thought you were talking about using a different rod than the Vance Spiral Wrapped. I tend to agree with you in your thinking about liking a more limber rod. I love the two Lami's I have been using, and I'm leaning towards getting one of the blue Velocity ones also. Haven't done anything yet tho. Thanks for your opinion.
