While it is not something that would interest me, these fish are destined to die. Most of them looked pretty ripe and I'm not sure what the quality of these fish would really be for table fare. I agree that it could possibly lead to bad behavior at other times but I don't know about that for sure. Especially since everyone in the video seemed to know the law and were following it. Once these fish reach this level of the spawning process is there any other way to catch them? I highly doubt that they would be very likely to bite a hook. Although it seems that many of you may not agree, I don't see how this differs from the annual smelt dipping that has taken place here in the northwest for so many years. Of course, now that California's poor management has caused the smelt to go on the endangered species list, I guess this traditional sport is finished for good. In my opinion, there may be more merit to this than many of you are considering.
 
My first trip to Canada the natives were allowed to use this same method. It appears New Mexico has done the same.
