What GPS and other rookie questons

Hello all,

First post and rookie kokanee fisher here. I'm curious what GPS you all use to track your speed? My FF does not have this feature and obviously my speedo on my boat will not tell me anything at trolling speeds.

Thanks for any information!

If you don't have a handheld GPS but have a tach ,watch for other folks who are into fish .At a polite distance parallel them and try to figure the rpm or throttle setting that matches their speed. My old go to was having a rig I could run on a short line beside the boat to check for the best action and hold that speed.

you don't need a gps for for speed , just put you offering in the water and hold the rod so it holds the rig under water observe the action on the dodger if it spins instead of waging back and forth you are going to fast, after that ajust your speed to try and give the fish what they want.

Another option is to make lots of S turns. When turning, if you are getting bit on the inside rods the fish are looking for a slower presentation, the outside rods equal a faster presentation.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Right now I don't have any downriggers so I'm long lining and using divers. My boat is a 16' Glastron with 40hp Evinrude so the best I can do is to just bump it into gear and hope I'm going slow enough. I may have to try dragging a bucket or two also. Any other information is awesome!

a good option for you would be a trolling plate ,you can but them used for 50 or 60 bucks and they work great for the type of set up you have , next would be a set of used hand crank riggers for about a 100 each and you would be set thumbsup

If you have a smart phone you can down load a FREE gps or speedo app. I used one to fish with for a couple years.

GPS not always the best

GPS will give you air speed but not water speed. I use the Luhr Jensen Troll indicator and it is spot on. The item is crazy expensive so if you can find it used that's what I did. The troll indicator can get you to tenths in mph. Happy fishing!
