YAMAHA f-8 Charging?

I know there is a kit from yamaha to put a rectifier on the F-8 motor, so it will keep the battery charged, has anyone done this to there kicker motors? and if so, how does it hook up to the batteries? I wondered if it needs a diod so it wont run down the battery while sitting,and if anyone has the part number, it would be great! It would be nice to have it charging while trolling, not just when the big motor is running, Thanks
 
Just for clarification, do you mean T-8 or F-8? The T-8 kickers come with alternator and I believe 6 amp charging.
 
Pretty sure its the f-8 its pull start, its a 2014 model if that helps Yamah website spec. say it has a 6 amp alternator but requires an opt. rectifier/regulator..

I bet that is it, I might have to look a
t someons motor to see how it exits the cowl and connects to the battery, Thank you! i saved that so i can get one orderedworthy12
 
The only thing that concerns me is that it is listed under, "Electric Starter Kit". I hope this isn't tied to you needing electric start to make it work. If it is, you're looking at a load of money.
 
I went thru a similar situation only my kicker is a Merc 9.9.... About 3yrs ago I was able to find a rectifier kit and the starter kit became obsolete as kicker aged in time warp. Purchased and installed charging kit and pull start continues. Finding its getting more difficult to start in winter months now.
 
Thanks for the info, did the wires off the rectifier just hook directly to the battery? I've heard if you undo the battery from a running outboard engine it will fry the rectifier, so I want to do it correctly.
 
I'm no wrench jockey but I'm going to bet that the rectifier plugs into a harness that already exists under your cowling and charging occurs through the existing battery cables. I have a Yamaha kicker that charges my batteries and the only wires from the motor to the battery are the primary cables.
 
Mine was a simple hookup with pos/neg wires to battery and a small external water tight plug at tiller handle for ease of disconnecting to battery. I've disconnected it while kicker ran for a day troubleshooting an issue without charging battery with no issue. Charge system/rectifier still works fine. I can remove my kicker, install it on a small boat without batteries to charge, rectifier not connected and it runs just fine as is. This my system.
 
Keep us posted, as I have the same motor and want to do the same. Curious on the cost and if it just "plugs in".
 
i went from a Yamaha 9.9 electric start to a newer Honda 8 hp with manual start and a 6 amp charging system , after running this motor for the best part of 2 years that a 6 amp alt will not keep my electronics and down riggers running all day let alone charge my batteries. i am in the process of putting a 12a system on that motor that i got used off eBay . it was nice when if i arrived at the lake with a dead or low battery i could fire up to Yamaha and an hour latter my battery's would be charged enough to fire up the main motor and keep every thing else going . so beware on these manual start motors you may not have enough juice due to the poor charging systems ,and you may be throwing away money on trying to get a 6 amp system to work.
 
Thanks for that info, I might be better off adding a third battery or carry a jump pack to be sure I can start my main motor, then let it charge the batteries. I will be running 4 electric down riggers and sonar, plus a VHF radio, so it may be more than a 6 amp system can handle I don't think they make anything bigger than 6 amp for the motor I have.
 
that's about the amount of stuff I run on my boat that Honda just wouldn't keep up maybe the yamahas charge better at idle than the hondas
