    What's everyone using for mono?

I am a huge maxima fan boy. 8# ultra green on all my koke rods. 15# maxima fluorocarbon for all my leaders. The stretch of a lighter mono combined with ultralight rods completely negates the need for snubbers. I wouldn't even consider using a braid. Turnoffs for me include the lack of stretch...

    Fish with Gary Tackle Company

My fishing buddy bought $300 worth of FWG tackle last year. He used it religiously, and has still yet to catch a fish on it. My wife and I were able to pull limits many times while he was drawing blanks. After many, many failed attempts with it, he has since hung up all of his FWG tackle. I will...

    Scents

I only use scent on corn. Like Super says, it can affect the action of lures. Also, when using plastics (i.e. hoochies, beads, etc.) the scent can break them down. If you don't deep clean the lures, eventually the lures will stick together, melt, and be worthless. This is especially true when...

single hooks vs. treble hooks, sickles vs. straight siwash

You are right Bob, the drop shot hooks do stick out a bit more than the octopus because of the straight eye (as opposed to the bent eye on an octopus). I have noticed that the drop shot style hooks really only stick out a bit when laying on a table, but definitely not 90 degrees (more like 30)...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

It is my firm belief that the lure/dodger combo will sink just a bit. Think about what it looks like if you are flat lining. If you go out 100' or so, the dodger/lure will sink a bit (hard to say exactly how much depending on the dodger, speed etc). I can't imagine that it sinks that much, but I...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

Yes, absolutely nothing wrong with copper and bronze. I used copper and bronze for years and always had decent success. The addition of real gold and silver blades seemed to be a game changer though because we did much better with that extra reflectivity (copper/bronze reflectivity is less than...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

The Hevi-Beads tool seems nice, but I'm curious as to why people don't just use a bobbin threading tool. It is basically the same thing and can be found at most tackle/fly shops for less than $5 (most around $3). I bought a cheap fly tying kit that came with a vise, bobbin, threader and all...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

As far as loops go, I'm not really %100 sure why I do loops. I guess I started tying my lures with loops and just never really saw the need for a swivel in there. The leader rolls that I use have a little "nub" on them that the loop easily attaches to and swivels are hard to get onto that "nub"...

    American Lake

This is what I was getting at. He originally said he was flat lining with gang trolls, so inline with the rod. Ball trolls are a different story. I choose not to use them when fishing for kokes, but to each his own, especially if it works for you. I will NEVER use gang trolls for kokes (inline)...

    American Lake

Salmonking, The first piece of advice I can give is to get rid of that gang troll if you want to be more productive with kokes. Gang trolls are great if you are targeting predatory species like trout because they imitate wounded or feeding baitfish. Kokanee will actually tend to shy away from...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

I have tried a few different ways to secure tinsel/flash to the lure. I always found that tying the flash on using thread and a vice was the best way to get a neat lay with it. The only concern I would have with a rubber bead is that the flash would not want to stay on the lure as well, but I...

    LEADER LENGTH FOR KOKANEE?

Did you end up using drop shot style hooks or octopus? Drop shot hooks and real gold and silver blades are a HUGE game changer.

    LEADER LENGTH FOR KOKANEE?

Strike Zone, If you look at the article again, there is a small part under the leader length section that says how I measure it and yes, it's from the bend of the trailer hook to the top of my loop. I also covered it in a bit more detail here...

    Leader Length????

Clawman, I think that the best answer to your question is that there really is no definitive answer. The problem is that the question (what leader size?) is too vague and there are too many variables. What dodger are you using? What lure are you using? How stiff is the leader you are using? You...

    Kokanee 101 ver. 20.14... ;-)

I was the one that wrote the article in question. Been a member of KFF for sometime, but haven't posted much here as I tend to spend most of my time on WaLakes. I heard from a friend that there was some chatter over here regarding the "article", so I figured I'd check it out and respond. I want...

Mono line weight for Kokanee trolling

I am a die hard believer in Maxima Ultragreen. I have fished with it forever and love the way it performs. It is a little more expensive than other brands, but I find that it is well worth the cost. I won't allow any Berkley line on any of my rods, or even near my boat for that matter. Have you...

Wa & Oregon Game and Fish Article March

When I first saw the pic in question, my first reaction was "why are they showing a picture of a steelie?". After thinking about this for a bit, I am reminded of an article that I have from Fishing & Hunting News regarding American Lake. It shows different areas and tactics for a variety of...
