I have found a coupon for an auto battery float charger for $6.99, regular $12.99 at Harbor Freight. I by certain things from them but at this price I'm wandering if this would be worth it. There are no details about the charger other than a coupon sale. I know the subject of float chargers have been discussed but has anyone have any experience with the Harbor Freight brand which is Chicago Electric?

Hey Rog,

I have a few of their Float chargers that I use on my boat and side by side, rideing mower etc, They have performed flawlessly for me. Great item for the price.

I bought one last year and after awhile it quit working. And then went a got another and it closed the contacts and blew the battery up. So I guess some are good and some are bad.

They got it in the Harbor Freight ad here for $4.99. I think you get what you pay for... I wouldn't trust it plugged in an unattended garage.2cents

Harbor Freight is a great place to buy the indestructible magnetic screwdriver or maybe a pair of vice grips. I do like their gloves for staining and painting and such. I've had great service from their gravity air assisted paint guns, Even their horizontal table belt sander has been good. Electronics, maybe not so much. tooexcited

I am skeptical on some things that are from Harbor Freight but their not all that bad on other things. I decided to purchase this item and see if if it does its thing. WHAT OTHER BRANDS OF FLOAT CHARGERS ARE RECOMMENDED?

battery float chargers

I prefer not to use a float charger. My experience tells me that any battery charger,if left on for long periods of time can and probably will dry out a battery. that includes very expensive chargers put on yachts to charge golf cart batts or batts as large as d-8. All non sealed batts loose water during the charging process. They all need to be checked regularly for water level. A float charger does not change that. I use a medium priced charger( 105$) that acts as a stater(110 amps), a quick charger (40 amps ) and a seies of options down to 4 amps. It is fully automatic and shuts down when the batt is charged. However I never leave it on for more than 6 to 8 hours. I always check the water before charging.
A bit long winded, but my batteries are 5 to7 years old and still good. My car battery lasted 13 years.
