Charging your Glow

A good way to rig a lite up is purchase a good 12V LED from maybe a trailer supply and make your own box, lined with stainless steel, aluminum, or even just foil to reflect the lighting from all around. LED's don't use much battery power as it is. It doesn't have to be that big and can stay on board at all times.

A black light shining on a glow surface for 30 seconds will cause that surface to be 10 times brighter than a flashlight on it for 6 hours.

Here is a simple list of bulbs in order from least to most efficient:

Least - White LED's
Blue/Purple LED's
Incandescent - standard light bulb
Compact Fluorescent or CFL - spiral tube, screw-in
Fluorescent Bulbs - long tubes
UV LED's
Black Light Tube
Best - Direct Sunlight

I heard about the black light thing last year and bought one of those mini LED blacklight flashlights off EBAY. It has about 9 LED bulbs and takes AA batteries. It seems to work pretty good. Ultimately, I was disappointed with the results and went back to my old SLR camera flash/ shiny can.

SD, Sorry bout the Rapala box. You had me sold.

I have had excellent results with a small flashlight made by Coast Cutlery in Portland. They had a booth at the Portland show. The lights are LED and UV (not black lights). They really fire up the glo stuff. As has been mentioned, when the sun's up go to the UV lures. Low light or very deep are when the glo comes thru. RG product work really well, but there are others I have found that work just as well and there are others that do a poor job. All that said, I caught lots of kokes for years before these products were available.

I decided to try and build a better mouse trap. This is a tool box, UV LED light tube and plastic mirror sides from TAP Plastics. Center board with reflective tape removes from the box and has hooks on the back to hang the leader loop off of. The box dimensions are 15" X 6" X 6" which provides enough room for lures and dodgers from Kokanee to Ocean salmon.

For those building their own chargers, be advised that gloss white paint reflects UV better than mirror finishes and add some blue LEDs to the UV LED mix excites photoluminescence items better than UV alone.

Nice stuff folks, there are some premium charge boxes here. You all do nice work!

Charging glow objects is all about having the correct wavelength of light. IMO, 350 nm to 390 nm is the best range.
