Just curious since we are still new to this but our downriggers (scotty 1050's) make quite the resonating hum vibration when down at depth. Is this normal?

Yes it is normal for your cable to hum. some people think it spooks the fish I dont my cables hum from time to time and I still put fish in the boat. thay say when your cables hum you are trolling at the right speed.

If my Scotty's are humming it means I am going to fast on my boat... Scotty 1106's. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks just never used a downrigger before and we noticed the humming the first time out just didnt think to ask til now and didnt know if it was normal or just us being special.

Given you mentioned you were up to 2.2MPH that could explain it. I'm guessing youu won't hear it at Kokanee speeds of 1.0 to 1.5.

Typically we have been going about 1.5 but not much slower than that so that gives us something else to try out there. Next time out will be back at berry since thats the close to home lake for us.

Hum

yes this is normal and it may even attract the fish. Braided Line does not make the hum that we can here and it does not give off any electrical charge associated with using the steel cable. The use of the black box will help with the electrical charge but if your zinks are set up on your boat properly you will have the proper voltage .65 for Koke's. You can check this with a voltage meter that reads 1/100 volt. Touch one lead to the wire and another to the boat ground which would be the alluminum hull or the bonding ground on a glass boat. Of course with the braided line there will be no worries about the electrical charge untill the fish is close the boat and they start to go nuts.

Good luck

Robin
