just bought my 1st boat. I am looking for a fishfinder, I have about $400 to spend. Whats the best bang for my buck?

What all do you want in the unit (i.e. GPS, color, etc.). I haven't priced or kept up with fish finders since I purchased mine years ago but I know the rule of thumb hasn't changed...by as much as you can afford. Sorry, I know that probably doesn't help much at all.

I have a Garmin 400c. It has color It seems like a good unit for about $400. It has temp. and for speed, I use a hand held gos. It has the advantage of beind able to be used for hiking, in a car , or in other boats. A base model can be bought for under $100.

Two things that I would want if you can find a unit with them that you can afford. The first is color, it's amazing what a difference it makes when you're out on the lake fishing and want to see what's on the screen. Maybe it's just because my eyes have gotten that old. The other is GPS, how nice it is to be able to know where your dock or beach spot is on a new lake that you're unfamiliar with. Not to mention the ease in finding the same area on a lake that you found the fish in the last time you were at the lake. I know my Dad has been pretty happy with his Humminbird 383c, it has both color and GPS, and seems like a lot of bang for the buck. Because I put mine on a cataraft I saved some money and didn't get the GPS. It works out okay because I really like the unit I bought and I can get by with my handheld GPS, but it would be so much nicer to have it all in one unit and not be taking chances with you handheld out on the water.

The 2011 Cabela's fishing catolog shows a Humminbird 597 (color/gps) on sale for $499-regular price is $569. Also, there's a Garmin 500 color unit for $349 and a Garmin 550 color unit for $449.

I agree with color and GPS. The difference between having both and having neither is significant. I've run a Humminbird 597 with the side imaging function and like all but the side imaging. That's not to say I don't like and would use the SI function, but the 597 screen is too small to support it unless you use the entire screen, and then you lose GPS.

GPS not only will help you find your way back, but you also can track your trolling patterns and return to the same spots where you've found fish.

I could get along without color, but GPS is a must. Look at some of the other, less expensive models in the Humminbird line as well. There are some real values there.

You can't lose a hand held if it's mouned on a bracket that is screwed down. If your combo unit dies, you are without either one. As I said, having a portable is the best option for me.

I found a Lowrance Elite 5 which is color and has chartplotter GPS. Most places are selling them for $540 to $580 but Amazon.com has them on sale for $430. Sounds like too good-a-deal to pass up...tooexcited

I have a Humminbird 595 with GPS LOVE it the 597 is the upgrade Cabelas has it on sale for $499 I would not be with out the GPS and color you can mark your fishing holes and camp site and most of all you use the GPS for your trolling speed if you look at other brand GPS Antena are add on
