Tortuga & I are both partial to Vance's Spiral Wrap rods for Koke & trout fishing. They are about $70. each. Mine has a new Tica Caimon KT100 reel on it and my other rod has an Okuma Magna 15 w/ a line counter. I love that reel, great clicker too.!!

I am curious if any of you have ever tried, or even heard of, a rod called a Sister's Compound rod. Also known as a C-Rod. I bought three of these rods a couple of years ago, one fly rod, one spin rod and one fly/spin combo. For trolling, I generally like to use my Loomis rod with the Curado reel because I like to use a stiffer rod and I much prefer to use a level-wind. But with all of this talk about everybody prefering a limber rod, I am curious if any of you like these rods for trolling. I love them for casting jigs, and they are available in casting rods I just haven't bought one yet. They are a little pricey but I know I've caught more fish by using them because of their sensitivity. Again, I usually am surface jigging and sensitivity is where it's at when doing such. Most people that try this and don't do well would be amazed at how many strikes they have probably been getting but never felt a one of them. All the talk about limber rods got me to try these out for trolling this spring but didn't have any luck so I went to the fly rod and caught some fish. Anybody else out there use these rods?

I have been useing rods good for 8-12 lb Line. Firm and slightly limber on the tip. Last year, I caught a 30 lb Mack on one of them with a open face reel. I didn't have the slightest problem but it took a while to get that boy in.

I just purchased a 7' Light-Medium 6 lb -10 lb St Croix soft tip rod to see how that works on kokanee. It seems a little light and soft on the tip, but the action could be interesting with a 4-5 lb'er on it. What I am concerned about is enough ump to pull the line off of the release when I don't have a fish pull it off. We shall see how it goes in a couple of weeks when I try the new rod out.

I upgraded my open face reels to a 10 bearing Shaimano Presidential Reels this year. I have been useing $30.00 open face reels for the last 10 years with out any issues, and these new ones are amazingly smooth and better quality.

I have caught some good size fish on on open face reels most of my life. I have trolling reels, used them one season, bringing in over 75 kokes on one trip with a friend of mine. I am not sure if there are any big benifits with the trolling reels. Maybe in the ocean.

Well I always remain open to information and ideas.

So I will be taking all my rods with me, and my old Fenwick rods that have caught almost everything with out any issues and they will remain in the boat, no matter where I go and what I go after.

Gonefishing, I think that a low profile, level-wind reel is just a pleasure to use. It is also a plus if you are casting heavier tackle since an open face doesn't do this all that well. In the same way, the open face reel will cast a light lure much better than the casting reel. The big thing that I have seen is that an open face is quicker to give you line twists than a level wind. Good swivels and a properly set drag will go a long way toward fixing this though. And since finding the Okuma Stinson reels, I've certainly become a bigger fan of open face reels than I ever used to be. These reels are reasonably priced but perform like they're out of this world. Quality really does make a huge difference. I think that what ever you enjoy fishing with the most is what you should be using. If that is open face, then use an open face. I don't think anybody's going to stop you.

And if you really like fishing with a rod that has some lower backbone but has a super soft and sensitive tip, take a look at those compound rods I was mentioning above. They were developed by a man in Sister's, Oregon, and now that he has passed away, a friend of his in southern Oregon has taken over the rod building for him. You can find them on the internet and read all about their claims. I can tell you first hand that they really do live up to their brag.

One of these days I will probably fish with some one who uses the level wind and I will be able to give it a try, That would help me evaluate and give me a good comparison.

You are right on the twist on the line with the open face. I usually put fresh line on every spring and use a couple swivels on my rigging which minimizes any problems.

I think the open face reels are faster when you have a runner. Not sure just guessing.

I found 2 rods in the front of the boat this evening. I am going to get all my rods in one place and figure out what I have going on. All kinds of lengths flexs and so on. I think I am set, but that is becuase I order to many of them on line and didn't end up with the right rod. They are all usable under the right conditions. Being in the boat all the time limits me to about 6 useable Rods.

What ever we use, soon to get them wet and have a little R&R

Not that it really matters a lot to me but, when it comes to speed, my level wind is faster. The retrieve speed on my open face is 5:1, and on my level wind it is 7:1. Of course, the diameter on my open face is slightly larger so maybe it's a push, I don't know for sure. If the open face were a little faster it would come in handy for my jig retrieve, but it is possible that it would cause me to be less effective at drawing the strikes.

I still prefer my fly gear over all of it. Now if I could just figure out how to get that size 60 Daphnia pattern tied on....... laugh hyst

Where are the lamiglass rods on sale? I just picked up an Okuma SST Kokanee rod from Bi Mart have not used it yet but it looks like its going to be nice.

I'm also planning a trip to Wallowa this year, can't wait to get one of those monsters on my line.

Celilo Kokanee Pro 7' 29.95 at Fisherman's marine. I have two, they work great, I have been using these rods now for 2 years they work great and for the money I think they are a very good value
