I'm having difficulty figuring out how to mount my cannon Easi-Troll manual downriggers on the side gunwales of my boat. Here is a pic of the left gunwale of my boat:

I've tested the clamp version that I used on the transom in the past and because it would only clamp to the inside rib, it wasn't sturdy enough. I've looked at the Rail/side mount made by Cannon and was put off by the price - $69.99 each. Does anyone have any ideas for mounting my downriggers that would keep them level and be sturdy enough? Thanks.

might just have to make a cardboard template & go to a Fab Shop and see if they can make you a plate out of aluminum flat-stock that will bolt on and be square.

If you are handy, make your own. My design for your problem would be a piece of 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" aluminum angle and a 1/4" X 5.25" X 5.25" aluminum plate. Mount the angle to the gunnel and the plate to the top of the angle. The angle should bridge the gap in your gunnel design and provide a solid base.

This is what I did on my Jetcraft Yukon. I wanted it to be a little high due to my bad back so designed it to help save me pain & suffering. I have a friend who is very handy with metal fabrication, I weld wood... lol Good luck and try not to overthink these mounts, very simple designs win big.
