I like this Proposing that anglers can use lake trout (caught as part of their daily limit) as bait — or legally dispose of them

this year I have got more pups fishing for kokanee and using kokanee lures than I ever have.
one time went through a big school where the kokanee were at, all 4 of are poles started to jump pulled them in and had 4 lakers on not to big about 15 in.

and a report from yesterday 8/27 up by buckboard where all the boats are fishing we did not see to many catch much. but we did OK
only two red ones they were only 17 in. the rest were 14 in., silver next years fish

ON my Garman Live scope we saw more schools of kokanee than I have seen in a long time maybe 1 and 2 year old kokanee
so I wonder how many will be laying eggs this year

I did OK this year fishing for kokanee this year, most of the time no other boats were by me. at flaming Gorge

Hey Robert, I did a turn & burn yesterday 8-29 fishing out of Buckboard. There was just a hand full of boats so it appeared to be in between crowds. I marked a bunch of kokanee school but couldn't get them to take. By 2pm I thru in the towel coming out with only 1 for the day. 2wks earlier I fished same area and had a good day with a limit but it was like a rodeo round up with the many boats around. What's surprisingly with both trips I did not catch any pups at all. I did manage 1 fat 3lb bow on the earlier trip. On my return trip home the traffic was getting heavy heading back towards Mountainview.

Hi Guys,
I will agree that Kokanee fishing has had its struggles the last few years, i happened upon some biologists whom were telling me that they believe the issue is really "Balance" the small mouth have all but been wiped out (or eaten out) by the burbot (anyone shocked) and that this has lead to the balance really being a mess and the Mackinaw just breeding out of control, and most people are tossing the mackinaw back.. I will say we had a day last year off wild horse where we could not even get the downriggers down to the schools of Kokes (at least what we hoped were kokes) as we would have 8 to 12" Mack's hitting them so fast we could do nothing with it.

if you give me a 16" to 24" mack 1.5 to about 4.5 lbs I will be happy to smoke it and use it like tuna fish.. (pretty tasty actually), but the little fish are annoying as hell...

I was happy to see the "use them as bait" maybe more people will kill a few of them. we have been killing them and tossing to the pelicans that have been spending the summers just south of buckboard.

If you want to help kokanee, you should probably keep the 1 fish over 28" that you are allowed. They don't get big by eating seaweed.

While I am not around Flaming Gorge, the darn Mackinaw here in the Payette Lake area are also a pain in the neck. Idaho Fish and Game are attempting to cull the schools as they are feeding on the Kokanee. The few chances I have had to go out seemed to always catch a few Mackinaw. I haven’t tried cooking or smoking one but have really enjoyed the very few Kokanee caught.
