Anyone do it?

Went out for the first time this evening. Quite an episode with a breeze and chop, but I did get a fish to the boat, tossed it back because theres no where to put it in a kayak. Seems like it could be an effective way to fish, I never need to use a down rigger or any weights and its easy to keep a lazy trolling speed. golucky

Though it was fun and an interesting way to float around, I'm not going to bother doing that again unless its dead calm. While its pretty stable, and I was never afraid of going over, my beer got all shook up and I got a little wet. :(

Re

We use Wilderness systems Tarpon 160's for fishing. I have had her out in 3'
waves with 15+mph winds. Once you spend some time in them they are very capable boats.

As to trolling, I like to keep it simple and use dispy divers. They get me where I need to be. Not to mention some great exercises

I started out using a Bucks Pontoon to Kokanee fish many moons ago. Lead core got me down where I needed to be during the early season and it was a lot of fun. Now, I have to use a big boat just to carry the tackle!thumbsup

MMM, I can really appreciate your comment. I used to fish koke's out of a 10ft zodiac but now use a 17ft boston whaler and am enjoying the extra room for all my kokanee "stuff" that I keep adding to my supplies. I am actually trying to figure out how to use my 10ft pontoon boat to chase the koke's since it is a much more affordable way to go but I am having trouble trying to figure out how to make it happen.

Went out again last week on a nice calm day and it was much more enjoyable. Its a small lake so I feel pretty comfortable and never more than 300-400yds from shore. Took a bit to get the hang of keeping straight and maintaining a steady speed.

Went out in the boat the other day to get a feel for the speed and to stretch out and have some fun. Next time in the kayak I'll have a better idea of the speed and look to get into a few more bigger fish. I can go out with a simple flasher and spin'n'glo/hoochie and get all kinds of action, so I don't need any tackle or weights, whatever depth it goes to seems to work, even though my fish finder shows them at 15'-25'.

The exercise was what I was looking for, as well as the convenience of throwing a 40lb boat in and out the truck.

I recently read about a kayak I wouldn't mind trying for fishing. I guess it's real popular in Alaska because of its ability to travel long distances into areas that other boats just can't go, for the most part. I think it is called a Mokai, but I may have the spelling wrong. It is a kayak that has a 6hp Honda pump for a power supply in addition to the paddle. The really neat part is how the pump will just snap in and then come right out so you don't have a boat that weighs a ton. From what I've read about them, dealing with the manufacturer if something goes wrong is one of the best experiences with these boats. I guess it's a company that still believes in taking care of its customers.

Once you've tried a pontoon with a standing platform, (one that actually works), you'll never want to go back to the little one's again. My 10ft Scadden is minimal, and I am planning on moving up to 10 or 12 foot Maxxon tubes soon.
