Lake Koocanusa -Has anyone fished yet this year??

Well, we made our trip to Koocanusa last week and we were not disappointed. The lake was still pretty low (down about 50 ft ) but the fishing was pretty good. We caught lot's (100+) of Kokanee. They were on the small side, mostly 7-9 inches and very near the top (10-15 ft.). It was kind of nice in that we did not need downriggers to target them and with three daughters that made my life a lot easier!

We also caught a number of nice rainbows and bull trout, although we were not targeting them at all. The highlight was my 10 year old daughter hooking and landing a 26" rainbow on a kokanee rod and swedish pimple with 6lb leader! It was a trophy fish and I think the flexibility of the lamiglass kokanee rod is what saved her when it took off on it's many runs and highwire act!

We're definitely going back!

That's an awesome Rainbow!!! She's got my biggest one out of there beat!!!

They bend those Ultra-Lite rods almost to the water don't they...I'm glad your trip was successful...what part of the lake were you fishing?

Next time you come up, we'll have to have a meet n greet!

We mostly fished from the Marina to 10 mile. Caught the big rainbow right across from the Marina and another nice one (19 inches) right near the dam. It sure was fun for the family to catch so many Kokanee. We really enjoyed the trip and that Rainbow was certainly a highlight!

Enjoy the summer!

I am planning on fishing here in April 26-29, where can a guy tent camp next to the water, and maybe close to a launch? Should the fishing be good in april/may? What is usually the weather like then?

That is a good time to fish...don't know if the Rexford Bench Camp Ground is open that early though. Weather is a crap shoot, it can be clear warm and calm or nasty as you can imagine you got a 50/50 shot!

I was planning on looking around Barron creek area. I can live with 50/50 weather. I just dont want to launch all four days, just launch and fish! Thank you for the info.
