It was only two weeks since we were at Pardee doing some scouting and the "Save the Drama for your Mama" video tour with mom and Rachel. That was a pre derby scouting trip to warm up and see where the fish were hiding. This time we were there without my mama but I had my lucky crew of Rachel and Jenna. We started fishing at 7:30AM up river among the fleet and apparently we found a honey hole of biting fish among the fleet as they challenged us to keep a line down the first hour. What a blast we had just trolling in same circular area over and over getting bit from 80 to 95 feet on Assassin Spinners, Regular Spinners ( A Double Trouble in honor of the late Russ Faught) and a few Apex'es mixed into the bunch. Scents were Kokanee Special, Garlic, Krill, Anise...didn't seem to matter.
The photos tell out story and in the end Rachel and Jenna took 1st and 4th respectively with Rachel catching a 16.61 inch 23.35 oz Kokanee, longest in the derby and 2nd in weight, including the adults. That's bigger than a lot of Berry Kokes we have caught this year. I don't know what it is about Rachel and Pardee but this is her 3rd year in row she has taken 1st at Pardee in the Junior division. Her reign of terror is over and she'll be putting a dent in my pocket book as an adult with a real fishing license next year.
Overall if you haven't fished Pardee this year you are missing out on the best year since about 2006 as fish weights were up 80 to 100% from last year's derby and the average length was 15.25 for the big fish each entrant turned in. There is still time to go get them, they are deep and nicely schooled up in various pods. Mark your school and pound it with numerous passes is my advice, tight turns, speed ups and slow down were the keys to our success.
Now for some pics... hopefully a video later as we have a lot of footage to sort through...
Jenna's Breakfast of champions before we start... hopefully her mom won't see this photo!
Off to the races....
Targets acquired! A 30 foot wall of Kokanee!
And a quick fish to the boat...
