I have 2 limber spinning rods that would be great for trolling for kokanee, on them I would run lightweight lead weights (I don't use downriggers) and level-wind reels, these rods have handled 8lb fish no problem with spinning reels on them, I would only troll with them so line guide size won't be an issue and I'm not concerned about the line contacting the rod either, anyone see any issues with rod spine strength since it will be backwards? I searched this site and the web and couldn't find much data other than I will most likely be fine but wanted to gather some current opinions before I head to the lake in a few weeks and test them on fish

I rarely catch kokanee and bows over 18" but you do never know what lurks below and I'm willing to gamble since they are old cheap spinning rods with a nice slow action that would be perfect for what I need without spending money on a new rod

I see no problem for now when I was a kid we used any combination that would cast a worm and we caught fish. the main thing is to have a longer flexable rod for kokanee, or as an option use a snubber. to boat more fish. yours would not be ideal but untill you can afford better I would go for it my question would be is do you have the spinning reels that go with them? for flat lining you don't really need level wind reels. dfly

I do have the spinning reels, even though I'm careful when running them I get horrible line twist on both setups, and I have 2 level wind line counter reels to throw on them and when I run any sinkers on the poles at all I prefer to have the line counter reels to avoid the line twist and to quickly know about how much line I have out without having to count line pulls

thanks for your input dragonfly, I've seen lots of your threads/posts on kff and they're full of good stuff and I appreciate you taking time to respond

Another option if the rod has enough guides would be to strip most of them off the rod and rewrap them as a spiral wrapped rod, slowly rotating the guides as you move toward the tip. I'm hoping to pick up a Vance's spiral wrap this year.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just got my cabela’s tackle craft catalogue and I’m going to take a look at doing that, the rods would be perfect spiral wrap candidates
