I'm in the market for a new reel for kokanee trolling. I see a lot of folks talking about Tika reels on this site but don,t know much about them. It will be paired with a Lamiglas GC 792 UL rod and used for kokanee and trout. I don't mind paying for quantity but would like to keep it around 125.00.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Yes, Tica makes nice reels for a decent price. The Caiman series 100 and 150 are popular. They are getting hard to find as they aren't made any longer. I don't know what the latest replacement model numbers are. The only improvement to the Caiman series I can think of would be a line counter. Daiwa and Okuma both make this kind of reel. You should be able to buy any of these for less than a hundred clams.

I purchased 2 Okumas Convector CV15D with line counters matched with JJ Team Kokanee (red) Rods. They have performed flawlessly for me. I got a pair of them for about $70 apiece from ebay. Wouldn't hestitate purchasing these again. I also have a set of Okuma Magda Pro 30 linecounter reels but too large for the koke rods. They have performed flawlessly as well. Used on heavy rods for the bigger fish. Also have a pair of Ticas Gold Caimen CT100 reels going onto a pair of Vances spiral rods. As you have already noticed, Ticas are more pricey but well worth it. thumbsup

I have had great luck with the Abu-Garcia C-4 series of reels. We have several Abu's that have been around 15 years or so.
They are strong enough to handle steelhead ,pike etc, but are small enough to be compact . No line counters, but I dont realy have a use for them.
All of our koke rods, steehead/salmon rods all have Abu's on them.
We have never had one fail in anyway as of yet. (knock on wood)
They seem to sell for about $90.00 to a hundred mark.

The Tica reels are very popular good bang for the buck ive have been fishing Shimano reels exclusively for the last 25 years currently I have 4 Calcutta reels 3 Cardiff and 3 Bantom 50 the Bantoms are no longer made all are matched to Fenwick HMG rods or carbon vail the Calcuttas may be more than you want to spend the Tekota is also a great reel one thing i would consider on a new purchase is a reel with a clicker lots of smaller level wind reels dont offer this option

I like and use the Abu Garcia 5500LC w/line counter for spring surface flat lining because drop back and thus depth is critical then. also a great jigging reel.
smooth drag, clicker, works well with downriggers, still made in Sweden with Swedish drive to excellence.
under $100
parts avail. everywhere.

have some Ticas and Okuma when we get a crowd in the boat
the Okuma is a tough reel that takes abuse. use the CV20 for driftboat steelhead plug fishing. they get banged against the alum., stepped on and keep on fishing. will take the punishment from a 20lb summer run on multiple 100yd+ runs with no problem

drags in both brands are good.

Tica

I own two Tica CM100 ' they are great, very hard to find, but they came out with a kokanee special, looks great same bearing ratio and everything cant tell a difference, except color its silver, not gold or black.

The tica caiman reels are real good but the cm100and cm150 are real hard to find since they have been discontinued. The new kokanee special tica reel kt100 you can get them at fishermanswarehouse.com and at kokaneemart.com the only place so far what i have seen that has the kt150 is at stevesfishingsupplies.com. he also has the kt100 . good luck on what ever you choose.
