Ferg,
You are right about that. Besides, those banana weights sure diminish the fun! There is no doubt that the precision of a downrigger greatly increases the catch rate. I have tried to determine whether pop gear or dodger are best, wedding rings or hoochies, chartreuse or pink, and it is just too tough to figure. But there are a few important "musts": downriggers, shoepeg or maggots, speed, and location. Oh, and luck and timing!!!! If you are going to invest in a d.r., I would suggest you look at the Penn's on the internet. Not very common in this area, but on the west coast where I fish each summer, they are the go to downrigger. I love 'em. Big numbers so you can see the depth from everywhere in the boat. My oldest Penn is 30 years old and never had a problem with it. The repair guy in Port Angeles tells me the Cannons break down at ten times the rate of the Penns. He fixes them all, and swears by the Penns. Just saying, take a look. Thanks for sharing info. Hope to hear from you often. Mike
