I went fishing up at Strawberry one day last week with a friend and at the end of the trip I witnessed how flexible one of JJ red koke rods are. I had a good side view watching the fishing line get caught in the downrigger spool and started winding the rod on the spool. It made a almost complete revolution on the spool before snapping in 2 pieces. I knew it was a good quality rod but didn't know it can take a severe bend like that. I look back on it and the face of the individual(no name mentioned) that this happened to and all I can do is just laugh hyst. And to here him mention about the F*&^%$# rod got caught in the downrigger, all can do is laugh hyst harder. Here's to you SD(no name mentioned) 101superman101

I would think that your reel's drag would be light enough to let out line (esp. on the drop)unless it was wrapped around your tip? Sorry about your rod, I just picked up one of the lami koke rods(the lighter brown one) and would be bummed if that happened.Bob R

Tim, it happen so fast, there was no time to react. How many impossible acts have you pulled off in your boat while fishing and wandered how that happened?
You have a valid point my friend. I have done things on my boat ,that I wondered, how the hell did that happen? I just fail to see how a fishing pole became wrapped around the down rigger spool is all.

It was the end of the day and the rod was reeled up with approximately 4' of line hanging free. The "up" button on the downrigger was hit and seconds later the free line from the rod entangled with the DR cable.

And to properly put some of the responsibility back on Roger, he removed the stern rod holders so there was nowhere to rest the rod but in the corner of the boat at the transom. It was like he was inviting this to happen.

Sometimes you just have to sit back and have a good laugh when that kind of stuff happens. Early one morning last year when lowering the manual downriggers to start the day I had the wires get coiled up under the spools...on BOTH of them! I ended up missing the morning bite cutting and crimping. This has never happened before or after in around 9 years of use. I guess all you can do is chalk it up to murfy's law.laugh hyst

Yea, Murphy's law. Shouldn't that make up for 9/10ths of the law? 2yrs ago I left a tackle case sitting on the dog house in my boat. After traveling about 10 miles back to the launch, I noticed this case was gone. Its sitting at the bottom of the Gorge with about a minimum of $150 in tackle. I've rebuilt the tackle since but I keep pulling on that rope that goes over my shoulder attached to one of my feet kicking myself in the a$$. stomper The mishaps are always going to be there. To bad we can't catch alot of this on film. Some of it could qualify as bloopers.
