New to fishing kokanee at Green Peter; definitely NOT new to fishing in general. I have not seen any threads about jigging at GP - what's worked? Seems like everybody else trolls, but I want to get good at jigging. Two of us went out 6/24 and got 5 in the 12 - 14" range. On 7/5 we only got 3 - one smaller and two 12". We did not see any trollers knocking 'em dead on either day. any suggestions (besides "start trolling") are appreciated. Old guys need all of the help we can get!

Welcome aboard checkerguy! I haven't read too many reports of jigging at Green Peter...maybe others will chime in that fish it. Where i fish we can usually get our limits jigging throughout the season just by switching techniques. Thanks for the info on jigging

I've read and been told both sides of the coin on the question of letting your line drop back slack vs. trying to keep a feel of it. We've only been out twice this spring on GP, so our experience is limited. Having said that, the fish we caught always were taken at or almost at the bottom of the lure dropping. The "hits" ranged from a smashing hit to a light "tap." I have not had any luck trying to keep a feel as the jig drops. If keeping a feel is the preferred method, then I suspect we are missing a lot of fish, since we only get them at the bottom of the drop when they hit.
It is aggravating to see our jigs in a school of fish on the finder and not have any action! I crave action!

I usually lift the rod 6-12" and let the jig flutter down...seems like most hits do occur at the bottom of the drop though like you mentioned. I hesitate for 5-10 seconds and keep the jig still before lifting...alot of times they do the "tap" thing then. I start out with just gel scent and add corn if necessary. If that doesn't do it i add a small piece of worm. Some days while anchored nothing works on the suspended fish or the ones off the bottom. Alot of times going out in deeper water and doing a slow drift targeting the suspended ones showing on the finder works well...covers more water and more fish. It's kind of a combination between vertical jigging and trolling.

I fished GP late Sunday morning and Monday morning at Whitcomb. Sunday the fish were scattered and a few being caught in the 60' range. I kept marking a bunch of fish near the bottom at 118' near the floating restrooms. i dropped a pink and white nordic and wham, 12'' koke. I repositioned and dropped again and wham, 2 lb. rainbow. The fish usually take it on the drop and you can feel the bing bang bing. Im an agressive jigger so i lift the pole a good 3 or 4 feet and quickly drop the jig, bounce it a couple of times and repeat the process. Monday I was just about to jig off of the point nearest the Whitcomb ramp (where the kids swim and dive) but the wind drove me off.. There was a good pile of fish there at about 80 feet. to judge depth, if the fish are suspended and you dont have a line counter, I cast the jig about as far as i think that the fish are, and just about the time the line is straight up and down, i start jigging. hope that helps. That was my first time fishing at GP. I will be back in August. I live on the main Umpqua near Elkton and the small mouth bass fishing is wide open. Aloha. fish on farmer.
