Checkout the offerings from Tica. I have two of them but the models I have are discontined. They have came out with a couple new reels and are targeting the kokanee fisherman. I don't have model numbers available, I just know one is red in color.

Okay, I just looked it up and it is the Caiman GJ.

The Tica KT line are great for koke fishing for around $100 it is a fantastic reel. I had 3 just bought a couple more. But if you want the smoothest drag and one of if not the smallest body reel look at the shimano calcutta 100 or 200. Man they are nice I have a few of these too but your closer to $200.

I was looking at the Calcutta and the Curado models. Not having used much casting setups I realy don't know why one would prefer the slim casters over the round - beyond the obvious difference in size and look.

mrmike

Diawa just came out with a new line counter reel really sweet. I will pick up two pretty soon. I just had two custom made rods built by wraptor Rods specially for kakonnee they were Limaclas blanks rods are really sweet, they were Christmas present pull up wraptor rods he has them posted.

For the money, you can't beat the Tica KT, CT, or GJ 100's. I like the fact that they are so small, but still have a line out clicker. The drag is silky smooth. You can't go wrong with the Shimano Calcutta either, but you will pay more with little noticable advantage over the Tica.

Another good reel to consider is the Shimano Tekota 300 which is the smallest of the Tekota line. I have a line counter on mine but you can get them without. They run around $180.

line counter reel is a caught fish count improvement for those not running downriggers and dragging weights. only thing we had 40 years ago chasing kokes and macs except for lead core which took all the fight out of the fish.

bringing in a fish was like dragging in a wet towel with leadcore. pole had to be like a broom handle to pull the leadcore. no line give, had to use snubbers. gear and line must have weighed 10 lbs

haven't seen leadcore in sporting goods stores for several years now. probably banned, the lead?

I’ve been using the Shimano Calcutta series of reels for several years now. The Calcutta 100 and 200 series reels mate up beautifully with my G.Loomis CR841 and Cr842 rods. I use P-Line CXX 6 lb. on the 100 series reels, 8 lb. on the 200 series and 10 lb. on a 401TE. They’re all great reels. No problems with any of them. Just for the record I do take all of my reels in for a thorough cleaning and greasing to Fisherman’s Warehouse every other year. Unfortunately you pay dearly for the Shimano Calcutta’s and the 401 cost is a heart stopper, although if Shimano built the TE line in a left hand wind 100 or 200 series with a clicker I’d buy them immediately. The 401TE is a spectacular reel. Last season at the Sacramento ISE show I got a heck of a deal on a couple of Tica Caiman CM101R reels. While I haven’t put the Tica’s through all the trials and tribulations of the Shimano’s, I’ve been really impressed with their smoothness, and in all honesty, they actually feel smoother than my Shimano’s. How their drags hold up over time will be the final judgment for me. For the price, the Tica’s seem like a steal. I have several ABU-Garcia reels also. Very smooth reels with reliable drags but significantly larger than either the Shimano’s or the Tica’s. Just last year I also bought 2 Okuma CV20DLX and CV30DLX line counter reels for a kinda ‘special’ type of long line fishing I do in Montana. They’re nice, but nowhere near the smoothness or size of the Shimano’s or Tica’s. How their drags hold up over the long haul will also be interesting. I guess it all boils down to what you want to spend on a reel. I don’t think you can go wrong with either the Calcutta series or the Tica’s. Hope this helps you a little.

Oops, sorry, made a huge mistake in my last post. Those 2 line counter reels weren't Daiwa's. They're Okuma's. I've edited that mistake.

You're right fernand, the Daiwa Line Counter reels are nice reels. I would've preferred them over my Okuma line counters except I don't believe they come in a left handed wind model. Anybody know if they do? I've got a new 27LC right hand wind model that I've never put line on. It seems a little too big for light line Kokanee fishing to me. They advertise a 17LC model which I've never seen but I would imagine is the smaller brother to the 27LC. Again, not sure if you can get any of this series in a left handed wind.

these reels are very rare to find for the use of the left hand since they are for baitcasting but cabelas shops should know where they sell lefthanded reels

spinning reel

I'm thinking about getting a G Loomis light line trolling rod (http://www.gloomis.com/publish/cont...trout___panfish_rods/light_line_trolling.html)

And I'm wondering what reel to pair it with? Any suggestions? I've had good experiences w/ Shimano spinning reels, so I was thinking a Curado model (not sure what size yet).

Your rod choice is excellent I have quite a few Shimano tekota 300/500 series 300 series is a little big for kakonee. Diawa has come out with a new line counter with is in the $150.00 dollar range. they are excellent choice if you can afford it. perfect set up.

I've been using a couple of Okuma Convector 15 for about 3yrs now that also have line counters. The reel might seem just a tad large but its not one I throw to the side. It does excellent koke & trout fishing. On another set of rods I'm using Tica Gold Caimens 100. SweeeeeeeeeTTT. They don't hold as much line as my Okumas but they perform very well. No line counter but thats ok, I grew up primitive and been able to judge how much line to put out. The Ticas have a very smooth operation, the clicker is not an overwhelming sound like you hear on some of the other reels.

That looks like a nice rod. How many guides does it have ? I bought a Shimano Talora Kokanee 7' Ultra light, medium slow action rod with 9 guides plus the tip. It seems like it's got a great action with lots of well spaced guides. I think I only paid about $80-$90 As far as reels go I think the line counter reels look clunky.laugh hyst Now I likely have most members pi$$ed at me. laugh hyst

I believe the rod you’re interested in is the G. Loomis CR841. It’s a 7’, 1 piece “ultra light” rod designed for 2-6 lb. line. It’s a great rod for Kokanee and light trout fishing. Not an inexpensive rod though. The price tag is somewhere around $235. Hey, don’t feel bad about your opinion on reel counter reels. If we all had the same opinion we’d have little need for this forum. With the exceptions that Silver Bullets mentioned they are rather large and cumbersome looking. I have several of them that I use for special purposes. They’re great in that role. For my Koke reels I measure out 100’ of line and mark it with a red permanent marker pen. You can make a mark at any measurement you want and that’ll give you an idea of how much line you’ve let out.
