The black box instructions say that you should insulate the downrigger ball from the downrigger. I bought a heavy "snubber" about a foot long made of rubber/plastic. That should be insulation enough, right? On the other hand, the hook is too large to go through the downrigger weight eye, so I have to use a loop of something to make the connection. What do you guys use to connect the two?

Also, does your line stopper hit the black box coiled line contact? What do you do about it? Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!;)

Monte, I've made up some connectors using the "Weed Eater " line for garden tools. It's not to expensive and easy to work with, even comes in colors! I use some about 3 ft long on the release clips so I can leave the ball in the water to attach the clips, also another about 1 ft. to hang the ball from the wire.

The wire on my Scotty sings/ hums when going thru the water so I am going to try the braided DR line.

Hi Monte

I have Scotty electric downriggers and went to the hardware store and bought a large inside diamenter spring, one that the line stoppers slide through more easily. No Problems!

Great Idea Kokonuts! If you're crimping swages with the monofiliment trimmer line be sure you're not damaging the line thus weakening the insulator. If you're actively using the black box to control the voltage in your downrigger system I really don't know why there is concern insulating the weight. The voltage is controlled throughout the entire system including the weight. Scotty also makes plastic weight clips if you're still concerned.

Hmm... I thought he was tying a knot in the weed eater line. Kokonuts...thanks for the great tip. Can you comment on the swage vs. knot methods of tying the weed eater line together?

Same problem, connector to big to go through downrigger weight. I hate it when things don't fit for they intended purpose. I could jerry rig it but I won't ,thats not why I bit on it. fish on crjahn

Sounds like there is something wrong with the eye of your downrigger weight. The snubber attaches with a wire clip. If the wire won't go through the eye of the weight???? Why not get a large dulok clip and add it to the weight eye, making a larger connection point?

Comes in a variety of sizes and should be available at any tackle shop. Both ends of the clip open so one could clip the back loop to the weight eye and hopefull have a larger loop to hook the cable clip to.

I have used Zipties before to connect the ball. I guess I've used zipties for just about everything at some point in time. Use a decent sized one.

I've have the Scotty clips on mine for some time now and like them. They are pretty tight going through the vinyl coated ball eye, but still allow some movement. They come in 2 packs.

I considered zip ties, but rejected the idea because of their tendency to strip under load. I know they make some industrial-grade zip ties that are much better, but don't know where to get them.

You mean like the one Scotty sells as a termination end? laugh hystlaugh hyst

The Scotty one would work great if you can get it on. I was thinking of a snap swivel used on your fishing line, except a larger version, or maybe even a duo-lock like you mentioned with a split ring. I wonder if a section of rigger cable made into a loop with a few crimps would work to tie into with the snubber? Any chance of seeing a picture of the dowrigger ball's 'eye'?

Hi guys....Here is what I do on my Scotty's (when we used to be able to troll for salmon) to connect the weight....Get some tuna cord, the same stuff used for boatlines to troll for albacore. You can find it on any commercial fishing website. A roll of it is cheap, it's very small in dia. and it won't break(It's at least 200lb test) and it won't rot, ever. Simply tie a length(6-8 inches) to your weights, tie a loop on the other end and hook it on your rigger wire snap. Will never let you down, and you can use it for lots of reasons in your boat(the extra cord)....it provides insulation from the wire, and makes changing weights easy.....just a thought from a saltwater guy........Mike

I use the cannon plastic clips. they work fine. I have drilled the hole bigger on the weight if to small.
