Yesterday fishing was dead slow. Started off trolling and ended up throwing the tackle box at em which produced 2 fish. As the wind started to pick up we anchored and jigged targeting kokes on the bottom in 50-90' of water and got a couple more. Remembering most of the kokanee we saw seemed to be towards the middle of the lake, we decided to try out a new teknique. I threw the sea anchor out and we drifted with the wind while jigging, targeting suspended fish in the 40-50' depth range. We finally started getting hit fairly consistent! Just another trick to try when things are slow...thumbsup

Gary, How did you check the depth of the Jigs? Did you have LC Reels or use the "count The Pulls method Or......?

Thanks Kokonuts

Our jigging rods are set up with spinning reels loaded with thin braid for a no stretch solid hook-set and around 10' of 6lb mono. I count the pulls to get to the desired depth. The first "eye" on the rod is 2', so 20 pulls gets me down to the 40' level. Another method is to count as the jig falls and add or subtract to the count when you start getting hits at a certain depth. There's a new braid out...every 10' section is a different color. Might be worth looking into.thumbsup

You can see a 1/32 oz jig head on your fish finder at 100'. No need to guess or use line counters. We do it all winter long as well.

Guess you don't have a problem with line and boat drift from those photos MMM....tongue2 That strategy of using the finder falls apart very quickly when you have a boat of kids, a bit of drift and a fish finder screen in the front of the boat in addition to mid water jugging.. When we jigged last year we were marking our lines with crayon and threads so they kids could get the lines down to a point quickly with no guessing since it was not on the bottom.

The nice thing about the Abu's versus the Ticas as a reel for jigging is the line holder moves back and forth on the Abu's in the line out position but not the Ticas. So one travel back and forth of the holder on a 5600 was roughly 9 feet of line so it was easy to have the kids do a bit of counting or multiplication to let them know how far out to go.

SB - What Sea Anchor brand / model do you use. Let us know what you find out about the colored line as that's another interesting alternative.

With braid, it seems like a sharpie mark every 10' would be a simple and permanent way to go too.

Kevin...the sea anchor is a Cabela's Advanced Angler Pro Series. They make 8 sizes depending on the length of your boat. Still checking on the colored braid...so far I found some that's colored every 10 yards from Cortland.

Check out Tuf-Line XP Indicator. Color metered every 10 feet. It's 10lb braid with the diameter of 3lb mono.thumbsup
