So my aged fishfinder finally found its last fish on my last trip out and I am now looking for a suitable replacement. I think I have a good idea what I am looking for but am not sold on the advantages of color over grayscale screens. Who out there can tell me why I should spring for the extra $$ and go color? 4moremney

Go to "www.fishfinderhome.com".
The write-up explains color vs gray quite well!

I just bought, the new to market, Garmin echo 300c color fish finder. (from Sails Marine for $182.00 )
Was surprised to find out that the unit has a program in it which turns it into a flasher. That's a nice plus!

SeaDog

I have a Lowrance HDS5 and, just like SeaDog says, many of the newer units have the flasher option built into the program. Why do I need a flasher? I pulled mine off the boat this past Hardwater season and truly discovered the need! I can also choose from several different palettes to be compatible with a variety of lighting conditions. I believe you are able to see better definition of the objects whether it's the fish you're targeting or bottom composition much easier than with typical grayscale. Depending on the model you've been admiring, the color option is probably only $100 more on average.

Answer this, do you own a color HD TV for your family or do you continue to stay with a monochromatic B&W and WHY?

Go with the COLOR!

Regardless of your purchase, take the time to learn ALL the features and it will pay you BIG DIVIDENDS.

If you were a tightwad by nature, stay with the black & white and spend the money on a good transducer. The typical Lowrance transducer is made out of approx. $10 worth of materials and is the biggest component in showing you what you see on the screen. Buy a color plasma TV and hook it up to rabbit ears. I believe a good color FF and a quality transducer like an Airmar is the best way to go but the transducer is more important than the FF. How much do you want to spend?

Definately color. I just installed the new Airmar transducer on my boat and can't wait to get out and try it now. Some of the fishfinders out there are selling the Airmar with them. My xducer has gotten whack in the past and would cost me approx $100 for a new one. Airmar cost about $125 for my color unit. The reviews are better clarity and picture of what you are looking at below you. It lets you see things that the original xducer doesn't see. My color finder/sonar (Lowrance) is going on about 5 years old now but still works like a champ. thumbsup

If you were a tightwad by nature...

Im not a tightwad by nature SuperD, Im a tightwad by marriage. nonono Im looking in the $300 to $600 range so Im not sure I can get a good finder and a great transducer for that price. I may have to look used and get lucky.

i was looking for a new transducer for my lowrance lcx27c and it would have cost me over 100 bucks, i found a used x510c with a brand new transducer on ebay for less then 200 so the deals are out there, you just have to be patient and be ready when the deal comes around

Try looking at Furuno or Si Tex fish finders. They are reasonbly priced.

I have Humminbird 778c that I just bought that will fit within your budget. I find it a good unit. It has good screen resolution and the power output.

Thanks all for the input. I am definately leaning toward color if I can find a decent bargain. If anyone find a good deal out there, feel free to PM me the info! 101chromefish101

With the Airmar it might be just a little over his budget. But some things the wife isn't meant to know. 2cents

Super D, How would I get an Airmar that went to a Raymarine ff, fit on a Lowrance. Do they make an adapter cable and where could I get one? Thanks for any info. I bought a used boat with an Airmar on the transom.

I think each unit is unique to the transducer. I haven't heard of any adapters for transducer going from one type unit to another type.

Contact Gil Travis at (209) 848-8533. He sells Airmar transducers and high end fish finders. If there is a way to do it, he'll fix you up.

Roger, Gil sells splice boxes for transducer cables. I bet that in a worst case scenario new ends could be added in place of the old connectors.

I often think that a plug can be cut off and a different one for another unit would work. Also I beleive the wires are shielded to protect from any external interference.

Well I went with color. Ordered a Humminbird 597 ci HD. Color, GPS, great screen, 20 and 60 degree cones, good customer service, etc. I can wait to see how many takedowns I miss while I'm playing with my new toy. Thanks for all the input everyone signfishin
