Ok fellas, I bought 2 shimano cardiff reels for my trolling rods, I went to use them on a local lake today and they would not lock up. We set the drags as tight as possible and they would not retrieve. The tempeture on my pickup mirror showed 38 degrees so I was wondering if it could have been a grease problem. When I wound line on them at the house they worked fine but out on the boat they let me down. Any suggestions would be great. I have not had time to tear them down but I was wondering if anyone used a special grease in colder weather?
Thanks in advance

The cold weather question is one you can answer from the comfort of your living room. Which model Cardiffs did you get?

They are the 401's. I wanted the clickers for my big gun trolling rods for macs, pike and other stuff. I have the model 201's on my koke poles and they work great. I used 1 today trolling for rainbows today no problem. Kinda discouriging to pay that much for them and they let you down. I will try them again after I bring them in and warm them up. I may have to look for another reel set up. I dont usually fish in weather like this but you never know. Thanks for the reply.

This doesn't sound right to have 2 reels doing the same exact thing. Are the clickers fully engaged? I am not all that familiar with the brand but have noticed on a couple of my reels that the clicker sometimes doesn't get pushed fully one way or the other and they will free spin, putting the trans in neutral.

I had a very similar problem with a couple of Daiwa Accudepth line counters right out of the box. One of them got repaired and the other was supposedly repaired but when I took it out, it did the same thing. I just dumped them and got better reels.

I use my Shimano 401's in freezing temps all the time. Never had a problem with them and I have 8.

I went and brought the reels home and checked them one worked the other the still the same. So I figured I would try some things first. I took the reel that was still not working and just spun the heck out of it as if the drag was to loose, thinking maybe it needed to be broke in,I pulled line with the drag set about half way. The reel started to work so I basicly burnt the clutch system some to possibly seat the clutch. I will give them a try again this weekend and see. I sure hope this will help. Thanks for the help.
