I fished Silver Lake today. 4 reasons why,
1, The Zoo. Not a big lake. However If you put enough boats on it, it becomes a zoo or a three ring circus. You end up with people on shore yelling that " this is my fishing space. Don't come too close. Then there are the boaters. They pay no notice of where the other boaters are.
2, The fish. This small lake is more often than not in the top 5 lakes in the state in production of fish/ angler. My wife (Anne) and I fished for 3 hours in the cold pouring rain and we caught about 20 fish. We used a Hildebrant spinner and a pink and chrome wedding ring. We didn't need bait , flashers, or smelly stuff. As the limit is 5/person, we only kept 10 fish. 3 for us and 7 for a neighbor.

3. I didn't need to get my boat inspected on this lake( yet).

4. Close to home. 10 miles by road. 5 miles straight line.

still eat good, but not as good as Koks.

Lake Samish

My wife (Anne ) and I fished Lake Samish today. We got to the lake at 10:00 AM. We trolled to the side opposite the launch and started to catch Koks. They were hitting on the surface. Anne hooked a big one that "net boy" lost. It would have been the biggest of the day if it had made the net. I in my great wisdom looked at the Depth finder and saw fish from 8' to 25 ft. I also saw small schools at 40' to 60'. I put my rigs at 25' and 40'. I got 2 at 25' and one at 40'.
At 11:00 AM the wind came up and the fish stopped biting. Changed side of lake, depth. colors, sent. bait, all to no avail .
At about 12:00 noon we were back to the original side and the old colors.( Pink ) Trolled around as the Koks were again on the surface. I put both downriggers at 15' Anne was back to the surface.
As we gave up on catching anything I upped the trolling motor to 2.6 Mph. we caught 3 Koks on the way to the ramp.
Colors were again Pink. Depth have it your way. Pink corn and no sent.
All fish boated were 11" to 12 3/4" total of 7 fish . No body to check boats. My boat not required, too small.

Lake Samish

Fished Samish again today. six riggs in the DNR site when I got there. time-0700 put the first pole down at 18 ft. did not have time to turn around before I got a hit.
lost the next 4 fish. Picked up a total of 3 by 8:30 . lost twice as many as I boated. Bite went south for about an hour. As the wind picked up the fish became more active. Got my last and was off the lake by 10:30.
Same gear as yesterday. Same depth. same size . water temp. was 51 to 54.
Still no one to check boats- OK by me.

Any chance they have posted signs up noting the inspection requirement? Hoping to play dumb if I get looked at.

Yes, Boat inspections...The COBellingham and What. Co Counsel (either/or, dont care) have added samish to the lake whatcom inspection BS to prevent invasive species, some kind of shellfish I beleive. I would imagine they are looking for millfoil too. Costs $50 for a year pass to both lakes or $20 a day. Have to have your boat inspected before launching in either lake and they will tag your boat to the trailer to make sure your boat hasnt been launched elswhere. If so, you get the luxury of being reinspected!

Lake Samish

No noticeable signs. .
the inspections are for to prevent the spread of invasive species . to include zebra mussels, quarga mussels , asian milfoil ,asian clams( all ready in Lake Whatcom) plus a few other invasive items.

$20 is unreasonable...$5-7 would be acceptable.
Guess I won't be towing the boat up there to fish and I'm sure not gonna pay that fee to get my pontoon inspected.

According to the Bellingham Herald ( on line) there is to be another meeting of the County Council on tuesday . They will be discussing the ordinance in committee .
They know it is flawed and unworkable as written.
A committee meeting will be held at 1:30 PM in council chambers in the courthouse ( Bellingham)May 7th.
