I would sure like to read about everyones ideas and experience on stacking. I have never tried this and purchased clips for the coming year.

Can you work deep 80 to 100 ft and then 30 to 50 ft on the same rigger. Do fish hooked off of the lower clip get tangled in the lines secured on the shallower depths clips.

Just curiouse if the experienced stackers have any insights that would help first timers at this.

I had a heck of a time with fishing getting tangled in my long lining when coming up from being hooked from down off my down rigger last year.crymeariver

Thanks

Gone I always stack when my deep line is 25' or more and you can pretty much run lines at any depth as long as your releases are aprox 10' apart. It has worked best for me to run setbacks the same length or to run the deep line farther back.I run two PENN 620s mounted about five feet up the rail from the stern. My deep rods are set straight out the sides ,I run them down 10' or more attach a stacking release clip for the shallow line and send it down slowly. The stacked rod goes in a holder at the back corner. This setup almost always works well, fish taking the shallow line come straight up clearing the deep line. The belly of the deep line seems to pull away from the shallow line , having the deep rod straight out to the side helps this work.Being a glutton for punishment I also run sliders on lines 20' deep or more.I don't run the sliders on lines with dodgers or cowbells, too much stuff flying around when you get a fish to the boat. One key to making things work was given by a KFF member on another thread,Make sure you are running the boat straight.Sometimes it goes horribly wrong because of trees, the bottom, sharp turns, and fish that weave your lines.Getting more lures in the water has been good to me,many days the stackers and sliders pick up the bulk of what we catch. it is well worth the extra work.

The only thing I'll add to what Trollmonkey said, and said so well, is stacking works well for me when trying to locate where the fish are biting. You may see them on the finder all day but if they're not biting, oh well. I also like running different lures on each rod untill I find what's working. Once that mystery is solved, I change over to the lure (and depth) they have selected for the day and quit stacking. If the bite slows, I'll go back to stacking and start the process all over. Maybe I'm making a BIG ROOKIE mistake by doing this but once I get into fish, I usually have a GREAT DAY!

Yeah my two typing fingers were wore out after that post.Smoke I think you are on the money running differerent lures and colors to see what is hot. Some trolling articles and shows on Infisherman talked about running baitsets of the same size and color lures .If you don't get bit you change it all to another baitset it worked awsome on their shows.I like the approach you use of more variety and narrowing in as the fish show what they like.

Great Stuff,

Thanks for all this informaton. This can sure save some headaches and a lot of frustration before I get something like this figured out.

I like the multiple lure idea also. With 2 down riggers you could fish 4 depths and 4 different set ups until you find a pattern. Boy am I getting the itch to get going this season already!tongue2
