Fished the Kokanee Power Derby last weekend with Rachel and I think I am finally recovered after smoking a batch of Kokanee and having a couple of Kokanee meals this week. This weather was great and the derby turnout was awesome. I saw a lot of familiar friends all out there to have a good time.
Stampede is having a stellar year with good size Kokanee as most everyone knows. The big fish were in the 17 inch class that but the average was a solid 15 inches. The fish were in the 50 to 110 foot range so it was a wide range to fish for them based on the cooler water throughout the water column. The Kokes were plenty happy to bite in 47 degree water down deep as long as you fished for them in the morning when the hot bite is going on till about 9:30AM and then you have to work for them if you don't have your limit already. We managed to finish 20th and felt pretty good about our day on the water.
The fish bit on a little bit of everything for us from Radical Glo Tubes, Hoochies and some spinners and even an Apex Rachel picked out. The highlight for me at least was fishing the day after the derby and landing a solid 18.25" Koke that was 1lb 14oz which was longer than any fish turned in for the derby but the same weight as the heaviest. He was just a day late and a few dollars short... maybe next time. Here's the photo journal....
Start with a pre-sunrise picture...
Locate your targets...nothing like giant mounds of Kokanee....
and just like that the targets decided to sample the offerings... a delayed triple with two nets engaged....
Rachel doubles up....
