I've always used the pinch style of releases, and about 3 years ago, I bought a rubber band release package called Gizmo, and last week decided to try the rubber band thing out. Fishing Anderson Ranch I found that the small koks that hit, just couldn't snap the rubber band. I lost more by having to jerk the rod to snap the band, than I caught. Had to go back to my tried and true release. Not sure what strength the bands are, but apparently too strong for the 10-11" koks that hit it. Doing a internet search in regarding the rubber bands used in downrigging, they keep mentioning # this and # that. Like #16. Has anyone used the rubber bands and how did you come up with the right # or strength needed to pop them on these small critters ? I do like the idea, but right now I'm scratching my head :-(

Do you know what rating your current bands are? #16 appears the be the lightest. The bigger the number, the stronger the rubber band. If they offer a rubber band with a # < 16, it would be lighter.

I would also add that a rubber band that will break with a small koke would likely not allow you to load up your rod at all which would be a deal breaker for me.

When I fished Lake Ontario for browns I would use one #16 and would use three #16 for kings. Way to strong for the average koke in my opinion.

The kit came with no info as to the strength of the rubber bands. I tried finding out from the Gizmo company web site, but it is no longer in business. In fact their domain name is up for sale. And I'm thinking you are correct on not being able to load up the rod without the lighter rubber band snapping :-( I have trouble even with my Scotty pinch style release too.

I'm thinking of trying out a Chamberlain release which will allow me to load up the rod without effecting how light the actual release is set. At least, that is what I've heard thumbsup
