Using Spoon?

I've had fair success with spoons but I like to run them naked (No Flasher). Get it? As I've said on some of the other topics, I'm a light tackle freak. The less junk I have between me & the fish all the better. If you consider needlefish a form of spoon, I like to put a bit more bend in them and run them alongside the boat to get the right speed/bend combination. Scent helps too!

Sep's Secret ,Dick Nites and,Needle fish have great action ran nekkid. It is definately sweet to fight one on a clean line. Another good spoon is the Frisky Fish(acme) it looks like a tripple fish spoon, but doesn't have a lot of action,so I run them behind a cowbell or a Sling Blade,um-huh.

Mid summer I've always preferred spoons over soft baits. I've run them with a dodger and without. When I use a dodger I'll run the spoon about 30 inches back. Scent is a must on my boat. If nothing else, it covers up the smell of the guys I fish with.laugh hyst As to which way I preferr fishing spoons, with or without, I guess it depends on the day and how the fish are reacting.

I run spoons with and with out dodger/flashers. I have had great success both ways, I just let the fish tell me what they want. From the length of leader behind a dodger to running a spoon without. Either way, scent is a must.. Imo

I don't use spoons much because I have more faith in other lures where I fish. I've caught a few useing them though. The ones I had the best luck with were the Luhr Jensen "needlefish" and "kokanee king" in the rainbow (kokanee special) color pattern. The leader length was around 3' in back of a dodger. I applied gel scent and used 1 piece of corn. Another way I use them is on a section of leader with a duo-lock snap and let it slide down the mainline where it stops mid way to the ball.

before the almighty squid/hoochie hit the market hard 4 or 5 years ago the spoons were a go-to setup at most ponds for me, this year i put quite a few limits of nice kokes on the boat up at the gorge and porqupine with spoons . Humdingers or needle fish always get there chance to make a debute when i am koke fishing.

Needlefish and Triple Teasers 30" behind a dodger or on their own is a regular go to for me. Needlefish in pink/white/orange and red head teasers are usually the most productive. If the fish are being difficult, adding a single piece of corn with scent usually gets the rods going.

I've had good luck with Sierra spoons and Krocodiles run close to the flasher or dodger at around 10-15" leader. In close they get a little extra kick similar to a hoochie but with added flash.

When nothing else is working I have an old dodger and strike chipped spoon at the ready.

I've had some luck with a 'Kokanee Killer' pink and white, behind a flasher. Haven't tried without the flasher, but I will. Lighter tackle is better imo as well.

Geese, Thanks Rob. Guess I better get up earlier in the morning and shower.
If you get up earlier it just means we can get on the water earlier. You wouldn't want me to tell someone you smell all flowery or that you smelled just amazing when you came on board would you. Fisherman are suppose to smell like fish and other ugly stuff or we are not real fisherman. That's why it takes a special lady to go out on boats with us.thumbsup

Mack are those Sierra spoons the ones Garcia used to sell or are they trolling spoons?

i use a wobbler (lake clear or williams) with a needlefish size 1 or 2 or a DB smelt. they work good.

Wow, dredge up a year and a half old thread!

That said, I like spoons. They were the ticket a few years at the Gorge when I first fished for kokanee. However, they have taken a back seat the last couple years to apex-style and to hoochies, at least until this year when they resurrected themselves as more-than-equal to the others.

So, spoons have a big place in my koke arsenal. I usually use them 24" or so behind a dodger. Though no firm number, seems that I land more of the kokes on a spoon, and that they tend to be larger.

I had good luck with a frisky fish spoon behind an irridescent dodgers(Hagen's) both in fire tiger on a June koke trip.I've got some Hagen's candle fish spoons 1.25" I'm anxious to try on trout and kokes.101chromefish101
