Well, looks like its time for me to get a black box for my boat. I've looked at the cabelas version and it seems pretty straight forward. The scotty one seems a bit more technical in its calibration. And I dont know anything about the pro troll. Any thoughts on which is the best/easiest to operate?
Again, I really appreciate everyones input.

The Cabela's black box is the Pro-Troll...Cabela's just puts their name on it. I've had the Pro-Troll on the boat for a few years now with no issues. If you remove your riggers alot (like when on the road) you might want to replace the wire connection going up to the downriggers though... I found a good quick disconnect at Radio Shack.
The Scotty has a great feature where you can go between contiuous and pulse mode but your looking at alot more money.

My vote is for the Scotty. Have had mine on a 22' Bayrunner for over 10 years. It cured my "hot boat" problems, and allowed me to get in on one of the last great king salmon seasons off the N. Coast. Now use it on a glass boat fishing for Kokanee three or four times a week. So far not even a hickup. Can't say that the "pulse" feature on the Scotty is a great advantage as I haven't been able to see any improvement in bites the few times I have tried it.

I found the same thing on the American Black Box when they used to build them. Continuous proper voltage is the key.

The Scotty is also about 4 times the price of the Pro_Troll. Also, Dick Pool (owner of Pro-Troll) helped design the one for Scotty and has used the same technology, with upgrades, on his. My vote is for the Pro-Troll as it a newer design and fishes at least as well. This is one case where more $ is not always better.

Thanks a ton for the opinions. I really hope by getting one it will fix my "hot boat." There is nothing that irritates me more than when I am not optimizing my time on the water, no matter what I'm fishin for. Free time is far too valuable to waste. It's the one thing that can never be replaced.

Thanks again!

Well, I can't find my electrical leak, but I struggle with electrical components anyways, so maybe I'm just missing the obvious. But does having a black box set to the proper voltage have that much of an advantage over having braided line on the riggers producing no charge using just the tackle to attract and catch fish? I went out for a about an hour this morning, and there were fish all over the place (there are lots and lots of small fish there in that reservoir) jumping and such, but only managed a few. The voltages were still high like .8 to .95. I wasn't even marking fish so I must have really been repelling them. So I wonder if by just eliminating the stainless cable i may be further ahead since as stated on a previous thread, a black box alone will not fix my hot boat, i guess...
So for those of you using braid would put in your two cents on the pros and cons of braid I would greatly appreciate it.
