We'll be fighting the season opener crowd at Wickiup on Saturday and Sunday. I added a second downrigger and need to make sure it works :)

Anybody else going fishing this weekend or do you avoid opening day?

well look for me up there too(Wickiup) I'll be staying at twin lake RV park. I've got a 21 foot motion marine guide motel its got a wrap on it my company name

We were up there both Saturday and Sunday. Got there at 8:00 Saturday and 10:00 Sunday. We caught 12 on Saturday but only one Sunday using the same gear. I have no idea why 24 hours would make such a difference but that's what makes fishing interesting. As I suspected, the place was a zoo!

The fish looked good and were mostly 14"-17".

Myself and wife arrivied at Wickiup Res. on Friday. We fished Saturday and Sunday weather was beautiful. The fish were scattered all over the lake took us some time to figure them out. On our tournament secedule days in June we are in for a treat!! We managed to land 15 fish on Saturday and lost 5. These were all pigs we didn't get a fish under 16 1/4 inches and nothing over 18. Sunday we landed 5 and lost 9 again all pigs we never got a fish under 16 inches largest kokanee I every caught for and average. I weight 5 fish that went 8lbs 4 oz cleaned with there heads on. There was a heavy fog made fishing harder on Sunday and not a ripple on the lake also pushed the fish off the bite (we had a tribble on and only landed one of them) we left at 10.30a.m. I was so impressed with these fish I cancelled my WALLOLA TRIP as these fish will be pushing 20 inches by memorial day weekend. It was so nice to fish cyrstal clear water, There were alot a boats on the water a lot of guys fishing for Browns.

Wow Mike, cancelled your Wallowa trip!!!!! That's pretty drastic!!!! Don't think I can do that. I am going to try and fish both in May/June. How about some pictures of those pigs Mike???? Great report!!

Thanks for the great report. I have never fished Wickiup- what details about how you fished can you share? I have downriggers and am used to fishing Green Peter. I am fairly new to the Kokanee game....
Thanks for any tips....

Kokanee girl wanted me to post some photo love to except I don't know how? I have one of my kids show me. we did really good on surface rods in the morning everything was watermellon swingblades and hoochies reds/blue/pinks/purple work WELL R&K HOOCHIES 1 1/2 INCH SIZE. The DOWN RIGGERS AT 25 FT. 1.5/1.7 TROLL SPEED. That was this week next week who knows. I had no luck with wedding rings The water temp I had 46 degrees at sunup at the end of the day it was at 51 perfect. That enough to get you in trouble.

I fished Wickiup both days as well. Both days couldn't be more dipolar opposites.
Saturday I was on the water by 6 AM and the weather was fantastic. We caught 11 kokes trolling about 1.2 MPH and trolling no deeper than 13 ft with an 80 ft set back. We used sling blades and those billed hoochies. The fish were HUGE. Of the 11 we boated, 7 were 1.5 lbs or better (we had two or three that were 1 lbs 11 oz). My total weight was 15 lbs 4 oz. I've never seen kokes of this size in Wickiup ever (been fishing this lake for 8 years). The smallest we netted was 18 inches in length.
Sunday I had high expectations given the pigs we caught on Saturday. I was on the water again by 6 AM and the fog was so thick you couldn't see 20 feet in any direction. It was cold too. I fished the same gear, the same setups, same spots (had to navigate by GPS) and we only landed 4 fish. The four we landed were the size of average fish for Wickiup and all 4 were on the boat before 8:30 AM then nothing the rest of the day. It was quite frustrating to say the least.
Sure hope to find more of those larger kokes…

Here's a picture of just a few of the fish I caught on Saturday:

You can sort of judge their size by looking at the filet knife at the top of the picture. I've never seen this many koke's this big either but then I've only been fishing for them for two years. It's interesting that nobody really did very well on Sunday.

I had one downrigger at 15' and the other at 20'-25'. The problem is I didn't pay attention to which downrigger I was catching the fish on so I didn't know the depth they were biting at. I'm still a rookie...

One other interesting thing - we didn't lose any fish. 100% catch rate.

Thanks for the replys. Where on the lake were you fishing? Where did you launch?

Thanks again for the info
Dan

Wickiup has two boat ramps one just east of Gull Point camp grounds. The other is in the camp ground. The one just East of Gull Point is big. I found the fish to be scattered through out the lake because the lake is at a flood stag and very high some of the camp sites were under water. Good rule of thumb just follow the boats it will take a while to figure out the lake. Mostly at Davis Arm, and at the end of Goose Island with is under water.

Mike is spot on... the fish were scattered. Attached to this forum somewhere is a map of the lake and some suggested areas to fish, if you get on the lake and there aren't any boats to follow. Use the plots on the map to get you in in the general area of where I typically fish.

Was up there today. Wind was nasty and cold. hard to troll where I wanted to be. Managed three and saw one other caught. Saw a bag of fish some other guys had at the launch. They got out before the wind started blowing at 10 when me and my two kids got out. Quit at 1. If the weather cooperates I can't think of a better place to be.
