I fished Wickiup both Saturday and Sunday. A lot of hours were put in for 18 fish. The good news is the fish are mostly 16 inches and fat. It was a struggle to find something that worked consistently. Pink hoochies or variations of pink spinners work the best. Garlic or Anise Craw were the two best scents and 1.4 to 1.6 on the GPS. The fish are still shallow and most were caught between the surface and 15 feet down.

The best part of the weekend was my daughter, who has not fish with me for years, asked to go fishing. She had a blast and laughed and giggled when reeling in a fish.

Here she with the first fish Sunday.

Way to go Brian... I think my dad is heading over for a few days with a friend he said he would take some pictures and I'll post a report for him. The size of the fish over there is very exciting to me I'm going to take a week off from work and check it out after the Green Peter derby.

Thanks for the Wickiup Update.

I think you are pulling a fast one there Brian, that can't be Wickiup, not a ripple on the water........Where were you really at.....laugh hyst

What was the water temp, wherever you were?

Wickiup is a early fishery by the first week of July they start to taste like mud. It's a very shallow lake and if it was me I would target kok's there in May or June.

Thanks for the report Brian...nice looking kokes!! I'm gonna try to get there at least once this year before Paulina opens up. Caught some rainbows out at Ochoco yesterday. They're great looking fish (12-16") and taste pretty good fried up. thumbsup

King Chinook kooKANEE Kid is right on the money Wickiup is a shallow lake, but July 4 weekend its usually over. The water warms up a lot. Its the first part of May and its allready in the 50 degree temperature. Maybe plan your trip a little earlier

Thanks for the heads up nobody needs mud tasting kokes those would be nasty little slime rockets up here in Washington our waters stay cool and most Kokanee lakes are deep bodies of water so thanks so I wasn't disappointed when I got them home but we need to have a derby one of these days with Washington vs Oregon Kokanee battle see which state has better fisherman which we all know is Washington but only a derby one in each state would solve this let's get the ball rolling one at American and another at oregon Fishermans choice

I was at Wickiup today from 10:30-1:00 and didn't get a bite. That's the first time I've been skunked there. Water temp was 55-57. Most people I talked to said they didn't get any bites either but one guy said he caught five. Beautiful day to be on the water but I was hoping to catch dinner!

I did say its usually over by the 4 th. I've fish the lake for two many years that I can remember. I will switch over to Odell after the 4 th good rule of thumb. Odell is deeper and colder. Wickiup is already alarming high at 56 or so It will cool down. Sunny bright days make it tuff HALF TO CONSENTRATE in the deeper channels /did get a report from a friend got his limit at GP fish were small

The quality of fish has alot to do with the water level. Last year the entire res only dropped maybe 6-8' from full pool by the end of August. The fish were in great shape and tasted great the third week of August(the last time I fished it last year). In years past(normal years) the water level by Aug is down 15-20'+ the deep channels even get warmer. Not sure what the water levels are going to do this year. I have a feeling that we will not see the high levels of last year, maybe closer to "normal". August could be a crap shoot. But the fish find the coolest water which is at the bottom in the channels. I am not sure what the temps are down there, though. I would be curious to find that out this year.
