OK, what exactly is "blowback". In trying to search for this it appears it has somethig to do with the DR ball weight???

Thanks.

With little or no speed, your DR ball and cable will sit vertically relative to the surface of the lake. The faster you go and depending on the weight and design of your DR ball, you will get "blowback" as the ball begins to drag behind the boat. The more blowback, the shallower your DR ball gets, and your accuracy decreases in your downrigger counter depth.

OH! And for all these years I thought "BLOW BACK" was from my wife when I said "I'm going fishing"laugh hyst and she was under the mistaken impression the lawn needed mowing!

Resistance again the d/r weight as it moves through the water causes blow back. The shape of the weight will cause more or less blow back Round shapes weights have more blow back, then pancakes shapes weights.
Trolling speed will also affect the amount of blow back .The faster the speed the more resistance against the d/r weight. Heavier weights will have less blow back, compared to lighter weights.

Thank you!! Up until this week, I've only had a little mini troll walker DR with a 4lb ball, usually never going below 25' and anywhere from .09 - 1.4 mph and to be honest, I never really noticed it DR line angled "very much"... LOL, never having fished with a DR much, I figured that 4lb ball was pretty much straight down!

I just ordered (and got hooked up yesterday) an electric Scotty 1101. Would it be smart to go to a bigger DR ball? (pancake, fish, round????) because besides my favorite kokanee fishing, I plan to add some lake trougt fishing, and that will be a LOT deeper!

Thanks very much.

I use a cannon Mini-troll on our canoe with an outboard, use 6 and 8 lb. weights, I stack two rods on it. with our larger penn manual downrigger I use 8 lb. and up, have only used round balls with a fin, blowback issn't too bab, you will need more weight with deeper applications then 4 lb. I'm about ready to try a pancake weight. We usually don't go below 60 ft. with the small unit, usually 30 to 40 ft. Good luck, Bob R

Depth and speed are the 2 biggest factors effecting drag. 8lbs would be a minimum and 10lbs probably best all around weight. Get pancakes!
