i was at cabela's today and purchased 2 of these downrigger releases, does anyone have a link to a diagram or video of how to thread the cable through the release for termination? i cannot find anything online on how to do it and the diagram on the back of the box explains the termination poorly

also, the tension screw (when not loaded with any tension) does seem rather loose, have any of you ever used this tension release? i'm wondering how much of an issue there might be when the release is submerged for a long period of time as i don't want the screw to back itself out when i'm fishing with tension set very light

I'm about 98% sure I know what you are talking about but to be sure, could you post a link to the Cabelas item in question?

so I take it is the one that looks like a blacks or sort of like a chamberlain? but only has the single function compared to the chamberlain? dfly

I'm unable to locate my copy of how to with these releases but you can contact the Walker Service Center. Talk to Neil Wilson and he can provide you with info.

Correct, I might return them and go with The black's releases, I know the chamberlains are nice but i don't want to pay more than $12.99 and I think the walkers or the blacks will do the trick

Does anyone know if the tension screw on the black's (when not loaded with any tension) would be as loose as the walker's tension screw?

Thanks for the info, I keep changing my mind about keeping the walkers or returning them, I know most guys on KFF would just pony up for the chamberlains

it a Chevy vs Cadillac thing. the walkers are better than pinchers but don't have the fine tuning and adjustability of the chamberlain's that makes fishing easer, and repeatable. after all, that is why you are buying them in the first place, right? and unless you loose them they are the last release you will buy. the magnet release won't wear out and you don't have to replace pads or the whole thing like pinchers so in the long run you are saving money. dfly

dfly, you are correct, ive grown tired of "roughing it" with pinch pad releases and ive decided i shouldn't settle for anything less than the chamberlains, ive read lots of info online about them today and they do appear to be the best, ill be ordering them tonight and returning the walker releases tomorrow

thanks for the info and advice everyone

are you buying direct? I know kokanee tackle sells them for 18.99 for the ball mount and the 101 stacker. dfly

i should have looked on kokaneetackle, i just ordered direct right after i posted last on KFF, next time ill take a peek at kokaneetackle, thanks for the heads up dfly

You will be happy with the Chamberlains. They can take a couple times down in the water to get the tension right but once you do they are right every time. You won't be dragging around little planter trout wasting time and they won't be false releasing like the pinch clips. I might be overthinking them but I don't seem to loose as many fish with them as I do the pinch clips. I think it has to do with the sensitivity...

Hope they work out for you.

I bought a couple of the Walker releases late last year because like kok(e)-head, I'm cheap. I used them for the first time yesterday and think there is just a lot of learning curve to this style release after fishing for so many years with the clips. Getting the right tension is one things that takes some figuring out but the biggest thing is training oneself to pull back instead of up when trying to get the line out of the clip manually. We are all pretty much used to yanking straight up with our rod to release from the clip. That is totally opposite of the engineering for these Walker clips. They are designed to take winch down strength in the straight up and down direction but release easily in the straight back direction.

I had a pair of chamberlians. I dont like to twist my line to make them work. Its hard on line. One of the places I fish kokes you may also pick up a 15 ib salmon or a trout that big, and twist in any line makes weak points. Thought I was having line issues so changed to 4 0r 5 brands of line--------- same problems. A good friend pointed out that I was making weak point in my line by twisting it. Went back to my pinch pad planner board type releases problem went away.
Never used the walkers though !

fishslayer, I don't see where it harms the line, I have used maxim 8lb on my reels for 2 years now with no visible or physical signs of ware. how many twists do you put on? and I use them for macks. actually for every thing. with pinchers most people twist the line to put them in the pinchers plus you have the friction on the line every time they release and besides you almost never put the line in the except spot when hooking up any way. dave the chamberlains release the same way the pinchers do even easer if you adjust it that way only you can adjust that tension separate from the fish release tension. plus when dialed in you, your wife or any one on the boat can hook them up and have the same exact tension every time. dfly

Walkers are actually upsidedown from Chamberlains. It's easier to pull the clip on the Chamberlains than the Walkers but the Walkers worked just fine knowing how to use them.

I've never heard that the tension releases are hard on line, but I have seen guys that have used the black's releases without putting twists in the line, they would run a barrel swivel on the fishing rod's main line and then run about 15' of leader to the dodger and they would put the steel arm of the release through the barrel swivel, they claim to have not had any issues with proper releasing and they said it was easy for kids or newbs to replicate each time

I will be trying a couple chamberlains this year but have a couple of questions. If they are set light enough to release on the planter trout will they still provide enough tension to set the hook well on a larger koke? Also, will the stacker work on braid or just cable?
