Went to American yesterday morn, somewhat slow on the downriggers, we only caught 3 for three of us, but they were fat 13 inchers. Two out of the three were on gold spoons flatlined, glow sepps dodger with wedding ring and maggots struck out as did slingblade and peewee hootchie.Did try wedding ring with worm tip, caught a bite but could't close the deal.Tried all depths from 20 to 45 ft. My wife Melanie flatlined up a koke on a gold little cleo flatlining so i pulled one of my rods out of the downrigger and used a gold hammered strobe spoon on the surface and hit a nice one. My good friend John who was kind enough to take us out than switched to a gold spoon with red eyes and hit one at 30 ft. We saw a LOT of fish on the surface, if we had started out flatlining we prob. would have hit more fish, Melanie lost a couple that hit, went airborne, and threw the hook.A silver little cleo did not produce, even in the sun.It slowed down abot ten so we beat it.Hard to launch early as the launch at Lakewood park doesn't open 'till 7, although the worker showed up about 15 minutes to 7.Nice red fillets,Dinner tonight.bob R

That is true, but the free launch on the other side of the lake opens around 5 am.

Good report, haven't been out latley.

bob r, thanks for the report I was wondering if anyone from the forum has fished it lately, I haven't been on american for 9 days and wondered if anyone has had any luck. Thanks 101goodpost101

Intro and Report 6/25/11

New to the forum, signed the roll call and this is my intro.

First, thanks to all for the lake reports for the south sound. You all have helped me get started with Kokanee fishing.

Fished American Lake Saturday morning 6/25/11. Fished from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Of 13 bites, we boated 7 fish from 12" to 15". Mostly fished north of the island.

RMT Bahama Mama + pink squid (8)
SEPs Chrome + Chartruese wedding ring (2)
RMT Chartruese dodger + pink squid (1)
SEPs Chrome + pink Apex (2) - this rig got the big fish

All were fished with Anise scent and/or pink maggots. Flat lined down to 43 feet.

No one set-up or depth seemed to stayed hot all day. Great day on the lake with my daughter. Fishing was hot and cold. Marked a lot of fish.

Question for all: Where is everyone launching early in the morning? (obviously not the north boat ramp cause it opens at 7)

Thanks,
Scott

I think the best way is the second exit south of Gravely Lake. Turn Rt, 2 traffic lights (I think) turn left, there will be a small sign marking the left turn into the launch. Opens around 5 am. Hope this helps.

Checked your directions against a map. Seems to make sense. Don't think I would have found it on my own.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Bob R,
I was there Sunday morning. Got the boat back from the shop so I wanted to give her a shake down cruise before the Sekiu opener this weekend.
As for directions to the southern launch take the Berkely St/Madigan Hopital exit. Take a right off of that and head straight thru the light. Go until the roads T's, there will be a sign that says public fishing in both directions, go "Left" to the launch. Follow it around the corner and take the first left, that will take you to the "Free Launch" but make sure you have your Sterwardship pass in the window or you might get a coupon from the state.

Fishing was good picked up a friend at Russell landing the FT lewis launch which also opens at 5:00am for your info. A little slow first thing, but once we found what they wanted to eat that day, we switch all rods to match the hatch. We were off the water by 9:00 with 17 fished hooked, 10 killed, the others long lined released, or handled carefully to catch another day!

I was using a bone stock Sling Blade from Shasta Tackle on one rod and a Custom Sling Blade blank w/UV coating I'm experimenting with on the other. My buddy was using the some non typical stuff also, an 00 dodger, well non typical for Washington kokanee anyway. No scent, just what Berkely puts on their maggots, on custom built propellar's we call 'em tied on my favorite Gamakatsu Split Shot/Drop Shot hooks in size 1 for this time of year. Nothing big 14 1/2" and one 15", compared to last year at this time when they were 18-20".

I'll be back on the lake in a couple of weeks, as hopefully I'll be hooking into some migrating Chinook this coming weekend.

See you on the water,
Winterun
