Attaching lake trolls to downrigger

normally the lure setup follows the clip off point in a fairly straight line when moving but you can't go off the downrigger depth I found on a 10 lb ball at 40' traveling at 1.5mph the actual depth by the sounder was closer to 30'-35' caused by blowback. with the blowback your ball is shallower along with the terminal tackle, also the line is a little closer to the ball troll. hope this helps.dfly

if you are far off the ball, isn't the depth of the lure affected? the ball is at 40 feet but the lure can be at 30 feet. how do you know how deep the lure is at?

The book Trolling Truths by Sep Hendrickson mentionsto allow for the natural drop of the terminal rig. It says trolling flashers or dodgers 100' behind the boat at 1mph can cause the terminal rig to drop as much as 10%... from 5 to 10' depending upon trolling speed and size of flashers and lures being used.
A more accurate method for the depth you mentioned would be useing a short setback and fishfinder that shows the depth of the downrigger weight.
