I got to looking at my growing number of keys on my boat key ring during my last trip and decided to test it in shallow water near shore. I put it in the water, attached to a key float that I use. It sunk like a rock. Now I know that I need to either add more flotation or reduce the number of keys I put on that keyring. I must have 7 or eight keys on it for various locks and padlocks associated with the boat and trailer. It's handy to have them all on one key ring because I only have to remember to bring that one item, not two or three.
But if I drop them overboard....that would not be fun.

I keep my trailer keys on my main ring for my vehicles and 3 keys on my flotation ring. They float pretty good. Any other keys will have to stay in such a location known to me on the boat. You have a good point about too many keys on one ring. Surely don't need to add a PFD to it.

With 2 motors, I have 2 keys and 2 starter lanyards. I put flotation on each and only have one key on each ring. I also keep a spare key hidden on the boat.

Monte...your gonna get a kick out of this!thumbsup
Have 3 sets of keys for the boat, none have any floatation... probably wouldn't do much good anyway. Each set has a total of 12 keys and are all labeled and color coded...
1. battery switch
2. front storage
3. motor cable
4. trailer hitch receiver
5. minn kota motor
6. spare tire cable
7. 25 hp Yamaha
8. 4 hp Yamaha
9. cable from truck to trailer
10. port side trailer wheel
11. trailer hitch ball
12. metal box's amid ship

If I ever go overboard I'd have to pull the cord on my pfd quick before the keys sent me straight down to the bottom!

You need a #13
13. Lock box with a spare set of keys. laugh hyst

My key list looks a lot like Silver Bullet's. The key set to the truck and camper looks worse...I think I have about 20 keys on that one. Sometimes, when I have the truck/camper keys and the boat keys in my pockets, I feel like a jailer.
I even get interesting looks from folks of the female persuasion. Reminds me of the old saw from Mae West: "Hey, Big Boy, is that a salami in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me"? But I digress...

I've never pulled mine out of the ignition but I hope the float works! thumbsup
