Does anyone know what system of measurement is used in assigning hook sizes? The reason I'm asking is I'm stumped why a #4 hook of one variety is so vastly different than a #4 hook of another variety. I would have thought that the criteria that made something a specific size would be universal and constant with shape being the variable for different styles of hooks. Recently, in ordering a hook size I was familiar with but in a new style to me, I was astounded at the size of the hook when it arrived. My curiosity was stimulated enough to see if anyone out here knows the answer.

Super D,
To answer your question. Within at least the hook manufacturing industry anyway there is no industrialized standard. The styles can be very similar such as the octopus hook design for example each manufacture has one. I use the Gamakatsu octopus hooks in my kokanee rigs in sizes 4 and 2 and in variying colors also as they make the best flourescent colors in my opinion. You compare them to say brand O, and the differences can be very minut a couple mm here and a couple mm there. Is all it is, sometimes the offset is very pronounced say in brand EC, but that's what makes different manufactures hooks appeal to different folks. Look at brand M for example, they make a sickle shaped hook and they call it an octopus hook. Go figure!! Wire diameter comes into play when twisting up hooks also, and can have an effect on the finished size of a hook. So to answer your question there is no set system in manufacturing hooks.
The best advice I can give you is. If there is a brand of hook that you have had great success with, stick with it. If for some reason you want to try another brand of hook stroll down to your local tackle store and compare the hooks. Then if need be order, some up online.
Good Luck and Good Fishing.

I've noticed the same thing between manufacturers... without veiwing their size chart it's pretty much a crap shoot.

On the store shelf I have seen two packages (different sizes of hooks by the same manufacturer) marked #4, when in reality one was a #4 (smaller) and the other should have been marked #4/0 (larger). It makes it tough to order online when you are not sure.

Winterun, manufacturer differences wasn't making me stumble as much as same manufacturer, same hook size but different style. I ordered some #4 siwash and the hook gap and overall size was twice that of a #4 octopus.

OK, I understand your situation! Now I don't use many siwashes for my kokanee rigs but I do for my salmon trolling rigs.

For example, my 2 hook hootchie rig I will run a 3/0-4/0 setup. But if I want to run a single point barbless rig, I will run just a straight 3/0 siwash, that will give me pretty much the same profile as the trailing 4/0 octopus hook. I just add a few beads to give it the length I need.
So yes within the same manufacturer you will see size differences in different styles of hooks. Especially the freshwater hooks versus the saltwater hooks, or salmon hook styles versus the bass hook styles, even worse, conventional hook styles versus the fly hook styles!!!
It's difficult to explain exactly why this is. I guess you could break it down to what an octopus hook was designed for basically, using bait, while the siwash hook was designed for trolling, or best used on artificial lures.
Send me a pm with your address SuperD, and I'll send you one of my hook catalogs I use for reference I have laying around house.
