Kokanee Fishing up here

--almost impossible to answer... Arrow is 136 miles long and 1.2 miles wide... Kooteney is 97 miles long and ranges from 1.2- 3.7 miles wide.

--I'd say for Arrow check out Hook it up tackle in Nakusp and for Kooteney check out Gill & Gift in Balfour.
--Both sponsor fishing derbies throughout the year and will have up to date information near the time that you want to fish the area about what is happening.

--Obvious: on large lakes weather ie wind, plays a big factor on where you can fish.

--I wouldn't hesitate to go to either lake but would leave my decision as late as possible... I've spent days at both sitting around with a boat on the trailer, waiting for a break in the weather.

--PS. I'm a whimp when it comes to big wind and waves.

--fished Monte lk north of Vernon on the weekend... only boat on the lake and stormy. This lake has been stocked with triploid kokanee however we did see some spawn phase cruising the shoreline. I though maybe as triploid we could still catch some biting fish.
--not many lakes as yet stocked with triploid kokanee however with triploid trout.
--will try to fish more of these triploid stocked kokanee lks to see if significant size increase etc.
--Monte is often ice fished and gets heavy pressure year round.
--On the day we only caught a trout.. no kokanee but weather and time of year definatley working against us.

--anyone else in BC fished triploid kokanee? any tips would be appretiated.

--What's up with this weather... went to Monte and Wood lk to get some pictures of ice fishing for kokanee as these are popular spots here for this activity... and NO ICE just open water.

Hi,

I'm hoping to try out Monte lake this year.
Just happened to see an episode of BC Sport Fishing where they were fishing Monte lake, they pulled out some nice kokanee. Would you happen to know if there is any camping near Monte lake? or what kind of accomodations are around there? I will be driving up from Langley ( about 45min from Vancouver). so I'll probably make a week of it and try and hit a few different lakes along the way.

Thanks,

I have all the ice you could want here. After last couple days of -40C, better bring a drill extension.

--Yes Monte is frozen now Skaha not yet and supposed to go above zero tomorrow.

--As to camping at Monte... There is a private site that has access to Monte across the Hwy.
--Public boat launch... I almost took the bottom of my motor off as big drop off at the Hwy... if coming form the south go past the boat launch and turn around on the side road.. return to the launch from the north... I doubt it will be fixed any time soon.
--It is an OK place to fish but not sure I'd want to spend a week there.. most people fish it for the day. Good place to dig for Opals along the roadside.
--If fishing on the way up take old Hwy from Merritt to kamloops and fish Nicola... provincial camp site.. larger lake , expect wind but can be fished near the camp area. Also Stump although most people flyfish for trout.. I haven't fished it for year but used to be good size kokanee there as well.

Thanks for the info,
I'm probably only going to stay for one night, the week will be the whole trip.
I'll be going up through and staying around winfield for most of the week. There are so many lakes in that area I would like to try.
kalamalka lake/wood lake,Oyama ect.
The nice thing about having my 11ft zodiac is being able to through it in the back of the truck and hit up a different lake every day with almost no effort.
I may hit up Nicola on the way back,if I come back down that way.

Thanks again thumbsup

--not sure which one but one of next two issues of BC Outdoors Magazine should have an article on Kokanee fishing. Some general fishing advice and a few tips on super secret lures..never know what the editors will do with a submitted article. Not sure if they will include pictures of some lures used as they are not from manufacturer sponsors.
--PS the sponsors lures work very well and I use them but many kokanuts like to use their own creations. I didn't write the article.

--Big thing I'm hoping is fisheries will take notice of the significant number of kokanuts in B.C. and that they should be paying attention to and spending some money on restoration of these once productive kokanee lakes that so many of us have fished for many years.

--Really encouraged that BC Outdoors has taken an interest in the fishery... I can't recall any other TV fishing show dedicated to kokanee fishing. Great news for those who enjoy this fishery..

--Please let BC Outdoors know you want to see more shows and articles... especially our USA kokanee fishing friends who may come up for a visit.

--I still do not think BC government understands that kokanuts will actually travel to fish kokanee especially in the 3lb plus range.
