Mono line weight for Kokanee trolling

Just checking if this is a good set up...sorry if this is redundant question but I was not able to find the answer .

8# mono main line.... (or do most use 10# mono)?

New to koke trolling: Is it like river fishing for salmon and steelhead? Do you go down a step (6# in this case) for leader material? OR do you go up a step or two to add stiffness ?

Welcome aboard! I'd recommend going with 8lb mono... if you have line counter level wind's go with whatever weight the manufacturer recommends for the best accurracy. You'll find kokanee aren't line shy. For lures with pre-tied leaders like apex's i retie with 8lb mono for better action at slower speeds. With lures like hoochies and bugs go with a stiffer line (12lb mono) so the action of the dodger gets transmitted back to the lure.

KokeRock its a little of both its mostly his/hers comfort Zone I use 10#Max Ultra green on my kokenee reels but I sometime use these reel for other fish say Walleye etc, You get away with a lot lighter line if you want , if you use these reels for just kokanee. I will use flurocarbon for leader lines I use 12# for my hoochie from my say wobbler/swingblade to a hoochie/or teaser the stiffness helps the action. Everything is Fluorarbon leader On everything I fish for/I like p-line also its just ones comfort Zone

That's a great all around line for both Kokes and trout. I'm a BBG fan too. Competes with Maxima for quality at a fraction of the cost.

Big Game is a great line, but I use my rods for more than just kokes, and BG a bit too much stretch for my liking especially if I want to long line or use planers. I know some like the stretch of nylon for fighting a fish, but my rods have plenty of give for fighting even Kokes and I do not find the extra stretch of nylon mono necessary. I tried some 12 lb Sensation, a hybrid monofilament, last year and really liked it. Right diameter for my line counters' accuracy. This year I put 10 lb Yozuri hybrid on my other set ups based on its generally good reviews and cheaper price. It is the same diameter as the 12 lb Sensation (I select on diameter more than rating), and have liked the way it handles so far, although not yet fished with it. I should mention that both the Sensation and Yozuri are a copolymer hybrid of flouro and nylon, not just a coated nylon as is the case for some hybrids. In addition to the lower stretch, they do not absorb water like nylon does.

I am a die hard believer in Maxima Ultragreen. I have fished with it forever and love the way it performs. It is a little more expensive than other brands, but I find that it is well worth the cost. I won't allow any Berkley line on any of my rods, or even near my boat for that matter. Have you ever looked at line under a black light? Something to consider:

This may not be the case for all Berkley line, but it makes me think twice about using different lines. Like I said before, Maxima UG all the way!

I'll check it tonight. I'm kinda hoping it glows cuz I catch a lot of fish so if it glows, there must be some bunk in that threads theory as I'm figuring that persons logic is one couldn't catch a fish with that line.

I agree about 8# Maxima Ultragreen for tying up any terminal gear. But I sure do like the hybrid line for the reel for several reasons including low stretch, resistance to UV deterioration, no water absorption, and price if you use the YoZuri.

SuperD, I'm really not clear what the issue with the "glow under black light" is? It obviously takes an intense stimulation of more than in sunlight to make it glow else we would see it glowing all the time. I would be more concerned if it was shown that it glowed under sunlight at wavelengths we can't see, but perhaps a fish can. Sort of like why not to use UV brighteners for your camo hunting clothing.

I've also used maxima ultra green exclusivley for my mono use, been using it for a LONG time, I never used Berkeley Big Game, but Berkeley and Trilene were the reasons I switched, had line breaking much too easily, but that was more then 20 years ago.Before Maxima I used another very reliable mono, Triple Fish, made in Germany. Don't see it around anymore. For trolling trout and Kokes on level winds I use braid, Power pro 15lb. with Maxima 15lb. as backing as we run into larger fish on our ultra-light trolling rods.8 to 12 lb. flourocarbon for leaders.I agree with Smokepoles, with limber ultra-light rods the need for line stretch to avoid ripping lips on kokes is non-existant, if drag is set light.Melanie likes braid on her spinning rod for trolling, able to set hook quicker with no stretch, (very limber rod). With my steelehead and salmon bank fishing I have tested all the lines listed above...Agreed..Big game is good...but STRETCHY...could be a good thing with soft mouth Kokes.

Maxima is good...hate to say this...does not test out to all the hype. (check out vince hawkins extinsive line test) google Fishing line test and It will come up. BTW: I still used maxima UG often...especially for leaders.

Pline...WAY strong...I noticed that Pline CXX Xtrong glows slightly under black light....not much of a concern as I have not used it for leaders...that is the moss green color..clear does not show it.

All the above are good lines and I have caught fish on all three from the bank....I generally use (bank fishing) Pline CXX for main...maxima for leaders.



BTW: Vinces test shows Pline the best by a long shot (suffix good as well) (strength, strength after stretch, and density). All were tested diameter to diameter as line companies have no obligation to hold to line pound test consistancy. Remember...Diameter...diameter...diameter.

Like all fishing..bank, boat, whatever...it comes down to what your confident in. I saw in another thread that somebody swears by Vanish...I lost six fish to that stuff one day on the cowlitz...will NEVER use it again...

Bottom line...fish what you belive in and enjoy.
