New Wyoming AIS regs

Smokepoles, in CA, the inspections are done and a seal is put on your boat. If you get to the ramp and don't have the seal, you don't get to launch or face fines. In our case, the boat would have to be driven back to an inspection point before being allowed to return to the ramp and launch. And as I mentioned above, a lot of guys get the immediate band put back on their boat when leaving so that the next time they arrive they can go straight to the ramp.

Thanks, SuperD, does that mean that you can only launch at a ramp when there is someone there to check for a seal? Also, are the actual inspections ever done at a ramp?

It is no clear to me at this point that it will work that way in Wy. I have not seen any mention of additional enforcement at the ramps to check for seal at launch or to put back a seal after you take out.

I can see that there are a lot of things that need to be answered for us. I generally camp and take my boat out daily, and I sure would hate to have go back to an inspection point each day.

I guess if it becomes to unworkable at the ramp, I'll just learn to fish from Lucerne.

I talked to a representative of the WGF. Very helpful lady (Regina?) in the Green River office. Even offered to give me her cell number if I needed to schedule an inspection at there office on a weekend because she is often there outside of scheduled office hours. She also said that the mechanic at Buckboard is certified and something might be arranged with them in a pinch.

They are not planning regular checks at the launch, but after launch you will need to retain your seal and receipt in case of random checks at take out or on the water. If you are staying in Wyoming for a bit, keep the seal and receipt as another inspection is not needed as long as you stay in the state. She did not indicate any limitations on that or indicate that any proof of stay was required, though I expect some test of reasonableness may apply if you are checked.

Overall, WGF seems to be taking a reasonable and helpful approach to the mandatory AIS inspections. There might be a hassle/inconvenience factor for those staying in Manilla, but launching at BB. For me, it will simple mean that I always travel to FG through Evanston during a time the inspection station is open. I'll travel home through Bear Lake if I feel the need for a change in scenery.

I forgot to ask, but the way the regulation reads, the inspection is "a mandatory inspection by an authorized inspector prior to launching in any water of the state." That would imply that you do not need to stop for inspection if just traveling through Wy, say I'm traveling to launch at Lucerne. I do not know how Idaho regs reed, but it is my impression that if towing a boat you better stop at any check station you pass.
