Update- Last week I picked up our 250 coho eggs and they are developing great. According the to formula given to me by the biologist that relates water temp and development the majoriy should begin to hatch this weekend. I had some fun with my school staff, being that I am the only male faculty member and sent out a "It's a boy..." subject email yesterday to announce the first hatched egg. Today we have 5 that have hatched and are in the alevin stage.
Over the past week over 200 students have had the chance to come see the eggs and get a short lesson on fish development and ecology. The plan is to bring the classes in at each stage so they can witness the changes.
I only had my cell phone with me yesterday but here are a few pictures for now. I brought another camera and hope to get a better shot of the newly hatched.
Two weeks ago the governor announced some drastic budget cuts and the funding for this project statewide was cut by the DFW. Fortunately our program may be spared in this financial crisis because Clark Public Utilites fully funds the project costs including the equipment. A project for my leadership students will be to write them to thank for their generosity and give them some pictures of the student activities. -Mack
