I'm new to this site as of today and somewhat new to fishing for kokanee. I would like to try and jig for kokanee this coming spring. Is this a common kokanee practice? I have ever only trolled for them.

Welcome to the forum bfougere. To answer you question, yes you can catch kokanee through jigging for them. I will not claim to be an expert in jigging for kokanee, but have used the technique in the early spring when the fish are on or near the surface and had great success. When they are near the surface a boat will often scatter the schools of fish. This is a good time to shut down the motor and try the jigging technique. I have also used jigging to catch those fish that are in a tight school in deeper water during the mid summer months. As a forum member you can search past threads and there are a lot of good info on jigging in past threads.

If the lakes in your area freeze over, you can start jigging for them through the ice. I usually suspend a jig or glow hook 8 - 24" below a small spoon, bait it with shoe peg corn and flutter the spoon up and down. I work my way up and down the water column looking for fish, although I usually do best pretty close to the bottom. I'll be out later this week if the ice is safe.

You can look at my posts for Loon lake in Washington. We use a Swedish Pimple with a glow hook below it baited with corn and maggots in the summer night fishing. It's a dead stick approach with very light bites.
