Washington Kokanee Power

Kokanee Fishing Forums

Help Support Kokanee Fishing Forums:

As with everyone else my time is limited, I have 2 young children that I spend a lot of time with between sports and 4-H, but the other thing I devote a lot of time to is FISHING, my 9yr old son Shawn (Wild Child here at KKF and on Ifish) is what you would call a fishing fanatic, we got into Kokanee fishing last year and that just reenforced his addiction to fishing. I think by getting him and myself involved in something like this will be a worthwhile time investment in his future and to help support something he loves. Ive always been told "If you want something done, give it to the busiest person" Count me in!

Now if I could just retire like Kokonuts I could get even busier. nananana

retire

When you retire you find you have less time. People hear you're retired and then the requests begin. Have to learn to say no. Just done not say it to your wife or kids.
This is some thing that needs to be done. I also have annother project that needs to be done, but I can't mention it right now, hopefully soon.

OK.....I see enough interest to get the ball rolling........but what I don't see is a "start here" point. I think (and that usually gets me in trouble) every one is waiting to have a place to "sign up" or apply to be a board member. At this point there is no board to be a member of. Bottom line...we have no starting point until some one steps up as a self appointed president. Normally presidents are elected or approved but in this case by who? Some one needs to say "I am going to do this", or option 2, those of us wanting to do this nominate some one and the person with the most vote get to do it, option 3, if there are 2 people with the desire to do it then we vote. But there needs to be a time frame, example: all votes or nominations need to be herd by XX-XX-2011.

Option 2 and 3 however will get confusing with out some one specific coordinating and making it all happen.

If I have missed something or stepped on anyone's toes I am sorry this is just my 2cents

I would be interested in helping out keep me in the loop. I'm not retired so my "extra" time is limited right now but would be willing to do what I can to promote, preserve and grow this wonderful fishery.

To start the New Chapter of Kokanee Power Washington we need to find out how many people are interested and to what degree they want to participate (Board Members).

I will jump in and make the list & with the help of Kent & the Oregon Chapter we will get it all started.

Send a PM to me at this forum including your name, phone #, address, E mail address and if you want to apply for the Board of Directors. The Board Members are NOT PAID and most of the work will be done by E mail & Phone. Any experience will be a big+.

Add your favorite lake for Kokanee Fishing & we will vote on where & when to hold our derbys!

Those were my thoughts...but better written.

I have never been anything more than a member so I don't know how or what a board member does. Or a president...treasurer I know. I am my own treasurer. So I can say yes to membership but anything more I can't commit to because I don't know if I can do it.

Once again this is the world the way I see it, but I think the old adage "Nothing ventured nothing gained" should apply here. Although I always seem to be busier than I want to be, and I don't know what would be required I would be willing to fill a position on the board. Of coarse it would be with the understanding if I find I cannot fulfill my duties or someone else feels that I am not or cannot fulfill the duties to their expectations or needs I would resign the position and help to find someone that could. This is not marriage "until death do you part". Given some examples, we joined Cub Scouts and I was asked to be the Den Leader for our group, initially it didn't seem like a bad idea, unfortunately our pack was very poorly managed and the whole thing was a joke in my opinion, when asked to return next year and or become the new Cub Master, I declined, end of story. Last year when my son played basketball, the school had twice as many kids than they expected that wanted to play, they were desperate for coaches, I reluctantly agreed to coach knowing nothing about coaching and having limited knowledge of the game. I learned quickly that I had to adapt and learn or those 10 kids were going to eat me alive. By the end of the season we were undefeated and I had a great time working with the kids, when asked again this year I accepted the challenge to coach again. Long story short, I feel the same as Toni in the respect that I don't like committing to something when I don't know if I can devote the amount of time required to do the job or if I even have the knowledge or ability to do it. But you will never know if you don't try, no one is going to think anything less of you if you give it your best shot and find out its not for you.

Besides that we are talking about FISHING not open heart surgery.

Looks to me like there is a great amount of interest in starting a Washington Kokanee Power

First off I want to say thanks for the fast responce for membership in the New WA. Kokanee Power. Please check out the "Kokanee Power of Oregon" web site, It tells the whole story of what its really about much better that I can explain. I have been a member of it for the past 2 years but really got started fishing the derbys last summer.

Several people are asking about the Board of Directors and I may have jumped the gun a little, so I will try to to explain it from the begining.
A group in California helped start Kokanee Power of Oregon in 2008. Now that they are running smoothly they (KPO) are going to help start the new Kokanee Power of WA. They will be completely seperate and independent 501(c)3 NON Profit Corporations. This means that most of the hard work is done and we will have the policys in place to start up. But we need a "Board of Directors" in place to form the corporation. The board is a very demanding job and it takes someone who has the time & skills to work with the policys of the Corp. and provide leadership for the membership while at the same time have some fun fishing! Most of the work can be done by phone & E mail. This is not a paid job but a volunteer position!
While this is going on we need Members who want to join in weather they have been Kokanee Fishing for years or just starting! Its about fishing, meeting people, sharing the latest tips, RVs, boats, camping, new lakes, teaching the kids and just plain ole having FUNN!

I forgot to add the Board will consist of at least , President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter editor. More positions will be added as necessary.

More Good News!!

I talked with Rick Fielder (Pres. of Ore.Kokannee Power Or.) today & he has given the final go ahead for WKP!! What is needed now is MEMBERS and a few people to help me set up a Temporary Board Of Directors.
I will take the lead as President on a TEMPORARY basis, so that we can move ahead with the Corporation and collect dues from new members. Once we get that done we can hold an election for the permenate Board. Then we will be off & running to hold Derby's & the rest of the program!

Kokanee Power of Oregon will be maning a booth at the Portland Sports Show Feb 8th. thru. 11th. They have given me the OK to share the Booth at no cost to advertise WKP!So I plan on being there as much as possible, & I know its a rough job but I could use some help with it if any of you locals could spend some time!

Also the Show in Puyallup is Jan.25th - 29th. Soooo if some of you in the area could post some flyers up there it would be a huge help!!

Lets all keep in touch by this forum , Private messages & E mail! If enough people can pitch in, help where & when you can, We WILL HAVE DERBY'S at YOUR FAVORITE LAKES in 2012!

Thanks for your help, Kokonuts/Richard K.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. - They used to count them by the dozens but today there are 300, 400, 500 maybe even more kokanee salmon running up Laughing Jacobs Creek.

Kokanee are descendants of sockeye salmon that were somehow cut off from the ocean centuries ago. They turn Sammamish and other lakes into their ocean and provide a healthy dose of nutrients and food for the tributaries when they run up the streams to spawn.

They have been in serious decline in Lake Sammamish over the last several decades. Biologists were worried they might lose the species entirely.

A century ago they swarmed up Lake Sammamish tributaries like Laughing Jacobs Creek in the tens of thousands. Development, pollution and other changes are believed to have reduced their numbers to the dozens.

"We were completely caught off guard," said Daniel Lantz, an environmental scientist with The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.

Lantz and other biologists are at a loss for the sudden improvement of fish but believe conditions in Lake Sammamish may have just been ideal for the last three years before the fish returned to the streams to spawn.

They are hopeful environmental problems like low oxygen levels in the lake may be improving. The fish are occasionally caught by accident by people fishing for cutthroat or other fish in Lake Washington. Kokanee must always be released when that happens. But if the population continues to rebound, kokanee fishing may some day return to Lake Sammamish.

Nice. Thanks for that info, Toni. I was walking along a one of the streams that runs into the Sammamish Slough a couple weeks ago looking for spawning salmon and I saw easily a hundred Kokanee in a short section of the creek, presumably from Lake Washington. I love to see them replenishing their numbers.

koke power washington....

ohhh man, i am so in....totally looking forward to this.

I am happy to throw in the full support of Stuart Angling also....

One thing I have found out is that both California and Oregon charge $35.00 for membership. That's true ! It's a small investment in helping keeping our quality fishing for the future!101chromefish101
