Has anyone tried or heard of using WD 40 sprayed on your lure as a scent attractor ??? I heard that a fellow by the name of Charlie White did some tests off the West Coast of BC for salmon with pretty good sucess. One of the key ingredience was fish oil in the WD 40 He was doing a lot of tests with a under water camera. It was about 20 years ago or so.

A friend and I took a guided salmon trip down the Quanault ( sp ) river about 20 yrs ago. He sprayed WD40 on the bait . I couldnt confirm it works , we got skunked . It was a nice boat ride though .

Yes, and it's illegal in California IIRC. We have so many oil scents available that using WD-40 is probably redundant anyway. And it doesn't stay on the lure well, if judging by the big oil slick it leaves on the water.

Not 100% sure it works but I use it all the time to clean my lures after using attractants. Really cleans that stinky smelly stuff off and gives them a shine.

I used it once on jigs for walleye fishing. I dropped my jig in the water at my feet and it left a nasty oil slick on the surface. I just couldn't use it after that. I don't know if it works well, but there are too many other scents to justify IMO.

I've read preparation H is a good fish attractant.I think they said the original had fish oil in it. But fish have fish oil in them.101smily101 Just curious if the fish are drawn to the sight of the tube, swim by ,roll over and wait for the soothing application?101no101

There isn't many Guide's on the water were you won't find it in there boats/fished a shad tournament a few weeks ago first place team used wd 40 on there grubs stuff does work extremely well

On a lighter note on Kokanee nation Vance Staplin told Gen Zog that pancake syrup was an effective scent. I tried scenting some shoepeg last week with Eggo syrup ,but didn't get a lot of action.May not have put enough in my corn.Plus it's great on pancakes, etc, unlike the other two (not that I've tried either.)101blah101

Food for thought the Pancake syrup and the maple flavored sauages its the sugar content's that attracts the fish/State of Washington uses it there Steelhead catching process (pancake syrup)

Ran into a guy the other day that uses the Gulp maggots. He mentioned that he gives the jar a shot of WD-40 every so often. Don't know it if works, but I got skunked...he had a pail full of silvers.

Back in the day WD40 was made with cod oil which made it a great fish attractent. Cod oil is no longer used. So if you're still using WD40 you're putting toxic cemical's in the water. It's up to you, but I think there are better scents available then one's that harm our resorces and pollute or fisheries.

(IMO) The right flavor bait is only a small portion that makes the difference between a bucket of fish and a smelly white striped animal. As far as WD-40 goes??? They say it is food safe, but only to use in the proximity of food preparation, never to make contact with food (does not contain heavy metals carcinogens etc). As to environmental issue probably not the best thing to use, but then neither is the smokey ol 2 stroke boat being followed by a cloud of blue smoke. To each their own, I tried it, saw no difference so now it stays in the boat to get used for what it was intended for, loosening up those old rusty pliers.
