And this is about the easiest motor to kicker connection going.

Guess I can throw in my 2 cents worth too. I have a Yamaha T8 with electric start, power tilt and charging. What a great motor! The T9.9 Yamaha is the same motor. My ProTroll remote throttle control just died. I'm looking close at the iTroll for the replacement. It has more features and is most likely built better. You can see it at http://www.itroll.us/itroll.buy.html The Merc ProKicker (still Tahatsu) is the high thrust with electric start, power tilt and charging.
The connector rods SuperD mentioned work great. Get the stainless, it can be bought at Amazon for a less money.
Four things that I wanted in a trolling motor. 1. Alternated for keeping my batteries charged, electric start, power lift, and last but not least is the ability to have a steady stream of hot water for my wash stations ( a guy on Ifish makes a zinc plug with a 1/8" hose barb that threads into the original place). The only motor that meets all of these requirements is the Yamaha 9.9 Hugh thrust. It has been a god kicker and is very quiet.
Clawman - WOW You may have a bad spark plug or something. I fish with a friend who has a 9.9 Honda high thrust. It is a great motor but VERY cold blooded when we fish Roosevelt this time of year. My Yamaha (T8) is older than yours but the same technology I think? Always starts easy and is very smooth. Not grouchy in the cold at all. Maybe a trip back to the dealer is in order or else more run time is needed; but I don't think what you are experiencing is "normal".
Since I posted that I have talked with a Yamaha dealer. He said he has seen it is this climate and when water temps are below 40 deg. they run better if you run the kicker to get to your final destination for a thorough warm up. Yesterday I started the 9.9 and ran it about 1 mile about mid throttle before trolling and that made a huge difference. Previous trips I was getting a suety build up on the motor and transom, now it is clean. So between getting more time on the motor and a good warm up run it is a whole different motor.Clawman, based on what you are experiencing it sounds like you have a spark plug wire off and are running on one cylinder! You can pull the cover and have a look. If all looks well pull the spark plugs; they should both look the same and be "dry" not all oily and gunky like an old 2 stroke. If I was going to pull them I'd pick up a couple of new ones to screw back in. Just my thoughts. You can PM me if I may be of more help. Alan
