Quick question for you "Longliners": Do you use a line counter reel or a pole mounted line counter? I have always used lead core with a 50' mono lead for 0 to 15' deep, then downriggers below that. I wanted to set up a pole just for longlining, and was looking at the smaller line counter reels from Diawa and wondered if they are what folks here use.

yes I run 3 poles , all line counters, I get mine at Bi Mart ( Okama ) on sale at times for $39 reg $49 and they make a stouter one for around $60 - went yesterday and did not do well 1 kok , lost 2 all day marked fish but they where closed mouth looks like maybe it was a late show - last Friday was real good but that's fishing

I use a separate line counter because they are more accurate. My wife might suggest I'm a bit picky. The counters on the reels count revolutions of the spool so the amount of line out depends on how full the spool is. However, if all you want to do is go back to the same distance, the counter on a reel is fine. I'm not convinced 95 ft vs 100 ft actually makes much difference. 80 ft vs 100 ft does make a difference.

G3, thanks for the tip on Okumas. Now that I think of it, I have one that I got in a trade a few years back but never used. I'll have to take it out.

Physion, do you have a specific model of rod mounted line counter that you would recommend?

We had a good day, brought home our limits of nice size kokes. Started early and stayed until late after noon to get it done. Caught all in the top 20'. Gold dodger w/orange crappie tube flat lined and orange spin-n-glow 12' on D.R. were top producers also silver apex and pink squid behind a pink sling blade caught fish also. All were caught in site of spring shores boat launch.
Good luck! Hope the pictures will openView attachment 8485

The clip-on line counters I have were made by Shakespeare. Amazon says they are out of stock and may not get more. The one shown by Amazon and made by Berkley looks the same as my Shakespeare model. I have only used the one kind so I don't know how they compare with others. I'm happy with mine. Doing some more research, Shakespeare and Berkley now appear to be owned by the same parent company. The Berkley counter may be the same as the ones I have but they don't have very good ratings.

I ended up having to go late afternoon to LP. Wind and lots of boat traffic. Early evening I finally connected with one, and it was time to leave. The last hour was nice weather and minimal boat traffic. Still beats doing a lot of other things.

Got 3 in three hours all deep, was there for the late afternoon bite. I avoid LP if there's time to hit the other lakes. Lots of boats, drama & inexperience at the launch ramp.

Got to love the people that park at the top middle of the ramp to tie-down.

Went yesterday mainly to break-in my kicker motor an learn to use my new HDS touch.

Picked up 1 nice 17" and lost a nice 20" when some stupid with a ski boat wanted to show his son and daughter a fish that I had on and almost rammed my stationary boat. His son and daughter received information on their fathers intelligence and ancestry and even learned some new word!

I run highly modified 60's vintage Red Ambassadeur 5000B's (B=Clicker). They are fairly rare but they do have a loud clicker which I can hear over the kicker motor. With 12# main line I count 14 trips across (7 each way) on the level wind which gives me 100 measured feet.

I am trying an Ambassadeur 4500 Kokanee Special (exclusive to Fisherman's Warehouse) this year. Its a little narrower with a clicker and the line leveler travels 18 times across the spool for 100 measured feet.

Two of us caught 10 kokanee yesterday and lost many more. They were all caught 13 ft or less. I use a spinning reel when I am longlining. I will use anywhere from a spit shot to a three oz. weight depending on how deep I am trying to go. To be able to go out the same distance each time I just count the number of turns of the handle. On the reel I use it is about two feet per turn. The distance is not exact but I can go out the same distance each time.

Hope this was April Fool parking @ Turner Gulch!

Fished Curlew and Lime creek area Sunday 4/10. Water was full of debris from rising water and discolored with sedement. Had one koke on but not another bite over 6 hours of trolling. Water may be cleaner by the dam but I didn't have time to check it out.

Just an fyi. The parking lot at Spring Shores will be used Saturday, Apr. 16, for the Robie Creek race. Launch at Turner if you can tolerate the congestion.

Unpredictable Anderson

We fished Anderson last Sunday 4/3. We fished all morning without effect and at 1:00 got on a pattern (pink and green, 25-30 feet) that produced 8 nice fat kokes and 1 chinook. Two of the kokes were 19" and the smallest was 16. I have a photo of the tape but can never get them loaded on this site. Fished it again Saturday 4/9 and ate a big piece of humble pie. 1 Chinook only (about 2 lbs). Water was very dirty. I'll be back but I'll be starting at scratch again. Weather has been wonderful there. On Sunday 4/3 a boat near us caught a chinook that had to weigh 10 lbs. It looked like almost 30 inches when they finally landed it and held it up and it was almost 10 inches from belly to back.
